                                                                          The Clown Statue

“Hello, kiddies, and welcome back to Victor Toothspark's evil laboratory. I hope you all had a fine day at school and are ready to hear today’s twisted tale. I found this little gem in this morning's newspaper and I have titled it, The Clown Statue. An innocent babysitter finds a strange statue of a clown in her client’s home. Nothing scary there right, but you will see,” Victor says as he laughs his maniacal laugh “hehahahahehahha!”

“So where do I begin? Well, on a Friday night a teenage girl named Robin was going to babysit the Burris children that evening. It was 7:30pm and she arrived at the Burris's home on Walker Street. This is where we will begin this afternoon's tale.” Robin had taken up babysitting as a job when she is not busy with school. When she arrived at the Burris’s home, Robin was in awe of the large home. As Robin  knocked on the large front door she was greeted warmly by Mr. Burris. About 8pm Mr. and Mrs. Burris left for the evening. The Burris children were twins about two years old. The children were already in bed asleep when she arrived. So Robin’s job was really easy now: all she had to do was make sure the house did not burn down and keep herself from getting bored.

                                                                                                               clown

So Robin, being a teenager, was filled with curiosity and started to poke and prowl around the house, seeing what they had. She walked into the den and in the moonlight she could see what appeared to be a statue in the corner of the room. It startled her because it was so odd looking. She turned the lights on and when she did she let out a squeal because it was the most grotesque clown statue she had ever seen. What was even stranger was that its eyes seemed to follow her with every step she took. Robin was freaked out by this so she slowly backed out the room, never taking her eyes off of that statue the entire time. She closed the door and sat in the living room trying to get her mind off that horrible statue.

About 9:30pm she got a phone call. Mrs. Burris was just checking up to make sure everything was alright. Robin reassured her all was well, but mentioned that their clown statue was very strange and scared her. Mrs. Burris was silent for a moment and said that they did not own any clown statue. The blood drained from Robin's face, and her breathing slowed considerably. Mrs. Burris told her to call the police and get the kids out of the house immediately. As soon as she turned around to go down the hallway, she saw the clown come out from the far room at the end of the hallway. He was about four feet tall and his makeup was terribly done and in his left hand he had a large butcher knife. The clown and Robin stared at each other for a few seconds. The clown’s eyes looked empty and he was breathing heavily. The clown looked like he was ready to attack at any moment.

There was a large window in the hallway between Robin and the small clown. The clown took two small steps towards her and he screamed a blood-curdling screech she had never heard in her life. The clown then leaped out of the window and scampered away into the night. Robin called the police and then ran to make sure the children were safe. Thankfully for Robin the children were asleep the entire time. When the police showed up, Robin explained what had transpired that evening. Half the police force scoured the neighborhood for this four-foot-tall clown. Two hours later, at approximately 11:30pm, the police apprehended him in the backyard of a house three blocks away. As it turns out the clown was schizophrenic and had escaped from a mental hospital. When he was a child he was tormented for being different because he was shorter than everyone else. After years of the psychological abuse from his peers and family, he finally snapped.   And when he did mentally break down, he tried to murder his own family. But before he could hurt anyone, his parents restrained him and he was sent to Valley Ridge Mental Hospital where he lived until his recent escape.

“So, kiddies, when you go to sleep tonight, beware of any odd statues you see standing in the moonlight in your room, because this story is a fresh one, only happening day's ago."

"Sleep well, little ones, and don't forget to look under the bed, muHAHAHAHAHAHA."

Author's Note

In the original story about the clown statue, the clown did not have a knife or any weapon at all, and it was told in a more modern setting. I opted to go with an older setting to make it different.  One of the reasons I picked this story is because this is an uncommon legend so most people do not know the ending, unlike more widely circulated urban legends. I wanted to give the story a little more life than in the short version on the Snopes website.  The difference between my story and the original is that mine is longer and has more description. I also picked this story because on some level clowns scare people a lot. And it is amusing because they are supposed to do the complete opposite, so it is an interesting predicament. This story is similar to the others I am using for this storybook in a sense. More or less these stories are going to be ones people are really not familiar with and so it will be something new and exciting for them. My goal is to expose you to new and different urban legends while putting the idea that there is some truth to them. This urban legend, for example, has not been disproved according to the Snopes website. Also, on a weird note, there was a real incident where a clown statue really did attack a little girl.  In 1992 a Ronald McDonald statue fell on a six-year-old girl and severed her fingertip. So beware of those clown statues in your house at night and at McDonalds.
