The Fox and the Goat

A shouting fox                                                            Goat with braces

Now on to my next story!   I want to tell you about a fox named Leo and a goat named Harry.  In this story, my grandchildren, you will learn to not trust just anyone.  I want you to know that not everyone is as good as they may seem.

One day, Leo was doing water aerobics in the ocean.  He was running sprints and doing jumping jacks. All of a sudden a huge wave came upon him. It picked him up and dropped him in the middle of ocean.  He was trying to stay above water so he wouldn't drown.

"Help me! Help me!" Leo shouted.

He looked around, hoping to see someone who could help him.  Finally, he saw a ship from a distance.  It was a ship covered in fur.  The name of this large boat was "Hairy Titanic."  The owner of this boat was Harry the goat.

"Over here! Over here!" Leo cried.

The ship kept on going, and nobody saw the fox thrashing in the water. Finally, Leo gave out a girly shrill, shouting, "AHHHHHHHH!!!!"

The ship started to turn around, and see what was going on.  On the ship, standing on his wooden leg, was Harry the goat.  Harry was dressed in his purple speedo.   He had braces and a smile as big as the sun.

He noticed a fox shouting for help.

"What is going on over here?" Harry asked. "I thought I heard a girl screaming."

"I am about to drown in the water! Please help me out!" Leo shouted.

Harry was always very helpful to anyone in need.  He trusted everyone and never thought anyone would try to harm him.  So he was thinking of possible ways he could help this seemingly poor little fox.

Harry decided to go grab a floatation device to try and help Leo.  Harry finally found a pair of his floaties.  The floaties had Elmo on them.  However, once he started to air them up, he realized there was a hole in both of them.  So, that wasn't going to work. Finally, Harry realized his only option was to put his wooden leg out and have Leo grab onto it.

So Harry said, "Take my wooden leg and I will pull you up, but don't pull me in with you!"

Harry put his leg out in the ocean so Leo could grab onto it.  Leo grabbed onto it, but Harry wasn't strong enough to get him all the way up. Leo decided to take charge and grab the leg hard and yank Harry into the ocean and use him as leverage to get into the boat.  Harry ended up adrift in the ocean, trying to survive, as Leo was on the boat sipping a margarita.  Leo ended up getting drunk and driving the boat away, as Harry struggled to stay above the water.

"Come back here, you girly-man! I want my Hairy Titanic back!" Harry shouted.

Don't trust strangers, especially foxes you find at random in the ocean!

Now, mini-gorillas, don't you see, I want you to be very careful.  Some animals may come off sweet and innocent, but don't put your trust in them if you don't really know them.  It's a crazy world out there!  The next story I will tell you is about a boy who cried wolf.  It will make you realize that liars do not get rewarded.

Author's Note:   The original story about the Fox and the Goat is quite different from my story.  Even though the moral of the story is basically the same, but  the way that the fox took advantage of the goat was different in the original story.  In Joseph Jacobs' version, the fox falls into a well.  He realizes that he is stuck in the well and cannot get out.  He sees a goat walk by and tells him to come down into the well because the water is so wonderful and plentiful, and it must be shared.  So, without hesitation, the goat hops into the well.  The fox then uses him as a ladder to get himself out of the well.  As a result, the the goat is stuck in the well.

I changed the story so that the fox gets hit by a wave and carried out into the depths of the ocean.  After, he realizes he may not get out, he screams for help.  As the goat comes to help him, the fox decides the only way to get out of the water is to pull the goat into the ocean and use his body to jump up onto the ship.  The goat is then left in the ocean, and the fox takes off with the boat.

I had the old man gorilla telling the story once again to his grandchildren.  It is yet another story the grandchildren can learn from.  This story involved a different type of lesson compared to the first story.  The first story was a positive lesson about good behavior, while this story is a negative lesson about bad and foolish behavior.  Overall, in the Aesop's Fables, these negative lessons are much more common than the positive ones!
