My name is Emily Maloy, currently a student at the University of Oklahoma. I received my Associates of Liberal Arts from St. Louis Community College in 2001 and I am now pursuing my Bachelor of Arts in International and Latin American Studies with a minor in Anthropology at OU. Although my page has very strong Leftist views, I am only concerned with social justice for all people, including idigenous peoples and other marginalized groups, and international peace. I do not intend to bash anyone or any orgainzation who may be on the Right who is also working towards social justice or international peace, because there is no sense in frustrating our goals by factionalizing our efforts!

My Favorite Propaganda:

Z-Magazine: www.zmag.org This is my all-time favorite magazine! It is the best place to get alternative news (as opposed to the corporate dominated mass media, i.e. the fascist Fox News Channel. May they be banished from TV!). As an added bonus, Noam Chomsky frequently writes articles in Z. Go Noam!
The Multinational Monitorhttp://multinationalmonitor.org/ This is also another great magazine that serves as a watchdog to the mega corporations and their heinous "business deals" around the world.

The Progressive: www.progressive.org/This magazine is also good, but it is very leftist (which is not a bad thing, but I also believe in fairness, so I don't get all my information from this magazine or any of the others above.)

Bush Has Got to Go Stuff: http://irregulartimes.com/expecon.html I think that Bush has not made our nation more secure with his "War on Terrorism," but insteasd, beat an overloaded wasps nest till it exploded and now we have would-be terroists whipped into a frenzy so that they are acting out. Sorry, but Bush has got to go.

OU's Arab Student Association:
http://www.ou.edu/student/asa/ This is an organization here on campus whose goal is to increase the community's awareness of Arab culture. It is an inclusive orgainzation that invites people of all ethnic backgrounds, all religions and anyone else interested. They show the diversity and beauty of Arab culture and basically help to dispell the myths and ignorance-induced fears many Americans have about Arab people. I am also for Palestine getting their own state and kicking that scoundrel, Mr. Sharon, out of office.

I wouldn't want to call myself either a Democrat or Republican because they are all essentially the same thing once one of them gets into the White House. What we need is to do away with the money grubbing bi-partisan system and we might see a real change. But since that only exists in fairyland, I am currently bound to accept the lesser of the two evils and go with the Democrats. Right now I think Howard Dean is the best candidate because he has a great stance on Universal Health care, which is very important to me. See for yourself at www.deanforamerica.com.

My Ideas About the Social Justice and Peace Problems

For as long as I can remember I have been plagued by the thoughts of what it means to be human. No, I don't mean what physical body parts one has or mental capacities, but  instead, the world is full of millions of people and millions of ways that people live thier lives (i.e. culture). (Thats why I started out as an Anthropology major). Although these cultures are so different, they cannot be too foreign to any one person since we are all in the classification Homo Sapiens. Therefore, we have fundamental similarities.

But why does one culture believe that the world was created by one supreme being, while others believe that it was created by many? What happens to people when they are isolated from each other and have time to develop their own languages, their own writing system, their own religion? Something happens where the people forget that there are others just like themselves in the world, who are also creating their own religion, and their own language and so on. People wage wars on each other, they forget that the things they think are true are really things that they made up ages ago, and start telling other people that their beliefs are wrong.

Fortunately, (or unfortunately), the world is becoming smaller and we have more contact and information about other cultures. But that has not stopped wars or kept people from oppressing others. There is still something terribly wrong with our world.

One of the problems I see is hegemonic powers crushing  weaker states with only the hegemon's best interest in mind. This can be broken down from nations, to corporations, to individuals. Is this human nature? Perhaps. But it is also human nature to help others so that when you are in a time of need, someone will help you. Another problem is nationalism or fascism. When people are so wrapped up in themselve,  in their feelings of rightness and  blindly following  the orders of a leader without a thought as to the repercussions, they slide down the slippery slope of ignorance and wind up in war and blood. The third problem is see is fundamentalism of any kind. Fundamentalism is inherently exclusive, brittle, uncompromissing and compassionless. The world changes and trying to hold on to archaic beliefs with out bending causes people to snap and violate social norms and mores. Its like lodging a spiked iron rod in a swiftly flowing river. Everything that bumps into it is either destroyed, entangled or stuck so that it eventually dams up the river. By diverting the stream, by trying to forcefully push heavier iron spikes through, these methods only complicate the problem and make everyone miserable in the process.

Of course, there are many other problems in this world, but I feel like these are the worse three because it affects people in every aspect of their lives- from the amount of food they eat, to the way they visiit with friends or politics. Any aspect of human life you can think of is impacted by one of these three  problems.

However, I am not one to sit idly by and let the oppressors continue to oppress and the starving people continue to starve. My career goals are to work to strengthen the voice of indigenous people in the world forum so that they will not be bound by  poverty-inducing "free trade"  and the poverty-assuring restrictions on loans given out by the IMF. Indigenous people and Third World Countries have made marvelous acheivements to turn their situations around, but it is simply not enough. They need the support of the International Community for self-designed plans to pull their countries our of poverty, civil wars and whatever else is keeping them oppressed by the hegemonic powers (namely the US).

I will soon add a resource page for more information on NGOs that address these issues, and other information along these lines.

    But enough of politics.
 On to other interests...

Luckily for me, I have an escort to the Underworld, and her name is Eva. She is the embodiment of the Egyptian Goddess Bast who has chosen to live with me and adopt me as her human. :)

There really is no good reason for this part, but Robin Hood is my favorite cartoon of all times! Perhaps it is because he steals from the rich and gives to the poor! Social justice at its best! Ha Ha.
My favorite character is Sir Hiss.

more to come later......
