In my project I chose to write the stories discussing the roles of seven characters that appear in The Hobbit, but not in any detail in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  I want to write stories that will tell what might have happened to the characters during the War of the Ring, a continuation of their role in Middle-Earth.  The war encompassed all of Middle-Earth, not just the peoples focused on in the trilogy.  I chose this topic because I like The Hobbit, and I think it would be interesting.

I learned many things while creating my stories.  First off, I learned that the works of JRR Tolkien are more extensive than I ever dreamed.  I though that I knew more than I actually did.  My stories were based off of characters and places I was familiar with, but I did not know all of the little details about those characters.  Everything from ancestry to story lines in books I have yet to read, I learned during this project.  When people read my pages, I want them to not only learn some facts about characters and places, but I want to inspire them to read JRR Tolkien’s works.  If I succeed in this endeavor, then my project was a success.

The one thing that people need to know before they read my stories is that they are based off of real characters and places, but that the situations (and some titles of status) are my own creation.  These are not retellings of Tolkien’s stories, rather a continuation from where he left off.  All of these continuations are derived from story lines in The Hobbit.  The stories that I have written tell the stories of seven characters: (1) Thranduil: King of Mirkwood, (2) The Spiders of Mirkwood, (3) Beorn the Skin-Changer, (4) The Stone Giants, (5) Gloin: Father of Gimli, (6) Bard the Bowman, and (7) The Wargs of Middle-Earth.  Links to these stories can be found before this introduction.

The sources for my stories are the complete works of JRR Tolkien, but mainly The Hobbit.  As I have not yet been able to read all of his books, I used useful web pages to receive needed information.  Links to these pages can be found below.  From these sources I took information about characters and places, and created my own stories for these characters.  I tell what I think might have happened to them during the War of the Ring.

I would hope that most people would enjoy my stories, but I think that Tolkien fans would really enjoy them, because they will understand more of the information included.  I would hope that the people who like my stories will be encouraged to read the works of JRR Tolkien, and see why I chose this topic.

Internet web sites that will be useful: (I will not use all of these sites in my project, but I included them as a resource for any Tolkien fans who wish to learn more about Tolkien's masterpieces.)
    1. http://www.tolkiensociety.org    This site is a great place to find answers to many questions about the books.  These usually pertain to specific questions.  Where can I find maps of Middle-Earth?  This will be useful on finding information on the web.
    2. http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/smc/journey    This site is an educational site that teaches you how to write a classic mythical story.  Especially a story about a mythical hero.
    3. http://www.theonering.net    This is a LOTR fan site that would be a great place to discuss my ideas with other obsessed fans who might have interesting perspectives.  It also has links to great web sites pertaining to JRR Tolkien material.
    4. http://www.tolkienonline.com    This site is a great place to find images.  It has drawings, paintings, and pictures that apply to all of Tolkien's books.
    5. http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/JRR_Tolkien/The_Hobbit    This site is a free encyclopedia.  It contains detailed information on all of the characters, places, and events in JRR Tolkien's works.
    6. http://www.glyphweb.com/arda  This site is the most complete resource for J. R. R. Tolkien's books.  It contains details on all of the characters, places, etc., that appear in his books.
    7. http://fan.theonering.net/rolozo/ and http://www.tednasmith.com/ are the two best sites for Tolkien related artwork.

All images located on my pages link back to their original location, which contains artist information.
