Toads or
Diamonds???
By: Taryn Bradford
It was a very hectic day
in the hospital and the nurses were running around like crazy. There
was a really cute Prince in the ER having his wrist wrapped because it
was sprained. The nurses were all doting over him because he was so
handsome and was very sweet. All of a sudden, a sweet girl walked in
the door and smiled at the Prince. The Prince smiled back and he had a
twinkle in his eye.
"Can I help you?" the nurse said.
"Yes, I'm having some stomach pains and I think I know why!" the sweet
girl named Julie said.
"Well, what seems to be the problem?" the nurse said.
"When I was younger, my mom never took care of me and always made me do
all the chores that we were supposed to do. She never made my sister go
fetch the water or clean the house. I had to do everything," Julie
said.
"I understand that you were treated unfairly, but what does that have
to do with your stomach now?" the nurse said.
"One day as I was fetching water, a little old lady walked up to me and
asked for some water. I dumped out the older water I had and fetched
her some fresh water to drink and visited with her for a while. After
she drank the water, she turned into a fairy and gave me many great
things. Anytime that I talked, flowers and diamonds would come out of
my mouth!" Julie said.
"That is amazing, but I don't see flowers and diamonds now so why does
your stomach hurt?" the nurse said.
"Well, my mother found out about my special talking and wanted my
sister to be happy. She tried to get my sister to find the old lady and
make my sister wealthy. However, the fairy already knew my sister was
terrible and made toads and rocks come out of her mouth!"
"Oh my gosh, that is not good! Did your sister get mad?" the nurse said.
"Absolutely! That is why I'm here. I am running from my sister to hide
because she wants to kill me and beat me to death. My stomach is so
nervous that I can't make the diamonds come out of my mouth so they are
sitting in my stomach," Julie said.
" I will see what I can do...I'm not sure I can do much, though!" the
nurse said.
Julie just lay there and dreamed of happier times but knew that she
was never going to be happy because her mother would find her and try
to kill her.

Julie awoke from her sleep and felt a lot better. At this point, the
Prince saw her and started visiting with her. Julie got so excited that
the diamonds and flowers began to come out of her mouth again. The
prince was surprised and had been listening to her story.
" I think you are beautiful and don't know why anyone would turn you
away or want to kill you!" the Prince said.
Julie was blushing and could not believe that the Prince was flirting
with her.
"I feel better now and think that I need to get back home!" Julie said.
"I know you think you need to go home but I would love to take you home
to meet my father and then we could get married!" the Prince said.
"Oh my gosh! I would love to," Julie said.
Then the evil sister came to the hospital because she was still
spitting up toads and needed surgery. The nurses tried to save her and
cure her of batracholaryngitis. However, there was nothing that could
be done and she died on the OR table.
Julie was sad but knew that it was not her fault about her
sister. Julie's mother went into the woods to find Julie but died
of misery. Julie and the Prince lived happily
ever after and the nurses and doctors were so happy for them. The
hospital had a busy day but it turned out to be one of their favorite
days ever.
Author's Note:
The original story of Toads and Diamonds is not very long so I added to
the length a bit to make it more interesting. I changed the setting
from the girl running into the woods to being in the hospital instead.
In the original, the mother ran off for the daughter and died in the
woods and I changed it to be that the sister and mother both ran after
her and died in the woods. This story was a little more sad than the
other ones that I have written about and did not have such a happy
ending. However, the story still ended with the hospital being the main
place in the story and the hospital ended the day on a good note.
