Dear Diary,

Today we finally reached the City of Oz. The first thing we were given when we arrived were these green glasses to protect our eyes. Once I put these glasses on I couldn't believe what I saw. The streets were lined with beautiful houses made of green marble. Everywhere I looked there were green emeralds. Everything in the city was green, even the rays of sun! I suspect the glasses may have a hand in this. Everyone here was dressed in green clothing and had a green tint to their skin.

The market was the most peculiar thing I have ever seen. Anything and everything imaginable was there. Everything was green: green popcorn, green candy, green shoes, green hats, green lemonade. Even the pennies to pay for it were green.

The only thing that was odd to me is that there were no animals, no horses or dogs or anything. This is really strange for me, having grown up on a farm in Kansas, to go to a place with no animals.

Finally after getting acquainted with the city, we decided to find the Wizard. The Guardian of the Gates took us to this big building in the center of the city to see the wizard. He told the soldier at the gate our intentions to see the Wizard of Oz.

The soldier took us through the Palace Gates and led us into a gigantic room with green carpet and green furniture with emeralds encrusted on it. The soldier told us to wait there while he announced our arrival to Oz. When the soldier came back, he said the Wizard would see only me so I had to say goodbye to all of my friends.

I thought I would get to see the Wizard right away but I was very wrong. I had to stay the night. I must admit I am nervous to leave my friends and stay in this new place by myself.

Dear Diary,

This morning after I ate breakfast, a girl came into my room to dress me for the day. After I was dressed we began our journey through the palace to the Throne Room.

I had to go into the room all by myself. I tried so hard to be brave. When I walked in, I found myself in this huge, round room with an arched roof. In the center of the roof there was this giant light that shone as bright as the sun. In the middle of the room there was a giant throne decorated with gems. Floating in the center of the throne was a gigantic Head. There were no other body parts- just a head!

Once he saw me, the head told me he was the Great and Terrible Oz. And then he asked me why I came to see him.

The voice was not as scary as I thought it would be so I worked up enough courage to answer.

I told him I was Dorothy, the meek and small girl from Kansas. I told him I wanted to go back to Kansas to be with my family. The Wizard said he would help me but I had to do something for him.

KILL THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST

Author's Note:

This is my version of Dorothy's arrival to the Emerald City. I changed very little of what actually happened. This story is very important to the evolution of Dorothy's character because she was able to tell the Wizard what she wanted from him and why she came to the Emerald City. This is the first time we see her out of her element, which is among the friends she has met along her journey. The fact she is able to speak up and essentially hold her own around the Wizard shows her evolution as a character.

I decided to end this story with simply "Kill the Wicked Witch of the West" because I feel that Dorothy's character was surprised by the Wizard's request and her diary entry should support that. This will also be the transition into the next the story in her diary.

At this point in the story it seems that the only way for Dorothy to get back to Kansas would be to kill the Wicked Witch of the West. Although Dorothy still refers to herself as meek and small, she is definitely selling herself short and will be able to do much more than she can imagine.
