Books:

Kanawa, Kiri Te. Land of the Long White Cloud: Maori Myths, Tales and Legends. New York: Arcade Publishing, Inc., 1989.   Page #:  87-90.

Details:

All the above sources were used in pretty much the same way: gathering of background information for the story and characters.

The greatest changes I made to the original myths:
The stories of Hotu-puku, Peke-haua, and Kataore are three seperate legends but all do hold the common element of Pitaka the Dragonslayer.
In the original myth of Hotu-puku:
Hotu-puku really does eat the villagers
He is not asleep when Pitaka kills him
He is mean and ruthless
In the original myth of Peke-haua:
Peke-haua is not Hotu-puku's brother
He does not mourn for Hotu-puku
In the original myth of Kataore:
Kataore is a he not a she
Kataore is not related to either Hotu-puku or Peke-haua
Kataore does not use Tuhikarapapa for leverage in peace negotiations
Kataore eats Tuhikarapapa

For further information see the Author's Notes.

Image:

After spending a solid half hour looking for an image for this story and coming up with nada I decided to use this.  It is not a traditional Maori anything, let alone dragon, but it fit the theme and I was desperate.  This image is copyright Katherine Lauder and is used without her permission.  Please visit her online gallery as she has some totally awsome pictures displayed there.
