Chapter VII

Idnochtan the Idiot

    A

fter the Great Removal all of Dragon-kind found the peace that they had so longed for.  The shroud of secrecy that covered their race protected them and made it possible for the Draconian race to make huge advances in the sciences and arts.  However, there are some members of this race that fail to heed the decrees made by the Council and insist upon flaunting their existence, mostly unsuspecting human tourists.  Among these Dragons are Mokele-Mbembe and Kongamato of Africa, Ogapogo and Champituram of North America, and the most notorious of all, Idnochtan the Idiot (also known as Nessie) who resides in Loch Ness, Scotland.*

    I

dnochtan had long lived in Loch Ness and, through carelessness on her part and surprisingly long memories of the human inhabitants of that area, legendNessie Image of her existence remained in the folklore of the people around the Loch.  Deemed by these humans to be a great beast of varying size and shape, she did not receive very wide renown until recently.  The building of a new road in the 1930’s around Loch Ness (and the necessary dynamiting which accompanied the construction) drew Idnochtan to the surface of her home to discover what was occurring.  Several men of the construction crew sighted her before she re-submerged.  The construction workers told other men of what they had seen and soon many people were flocking to the remote loch.  Idnochtan, possessing a rather vicious sense of humor, made a habit of surfacing near these tourists but disappearing before said tourists can reach their cameras.

I

dnochtan’s behavior has been officially reproved by the Grand Council of the Dragons and she has been the subject of much criticism by the Draconian community.  It is believed that the epithet “the Idiot” was originally given to her by an outspoken member of her family who believed that Idnochtan was bringing shame upon them.  However, not all of her relations or, for that matter, dragons in general believe that she poses a major threat to the secrecy of the Draconian race.  Some even go so far as to say that she is providing a service to the dragons by keeping mankind aware of “mythical” beings and perhaps being more accepting of the truth when our two races again rejoin.

I

n recent years the technology of the human race has improved dramatically and many scientific expeditions have been made to officially “prove” Idnochtan’s existence.  The Grand Council of the Dragons has held a long standing policy which dictates that the “rediscovery” by man of the Draconian race will be orchestrated by the dragons themselves and will not be instigated by the humans.  While the Grand Council has not yet found a way to halt Idnochtan’s “tourist baiting,” they have managed to make her agree to be cautious about where, when, and to whom she shows herself so that this policy is not violated.  Indeed, Idnochtan is, if anything, even happier with this arrangement, for the cunning and wiliness she displays only seems to frustrate her would-be photographers even more, much to her delight.
