This storybook is comprised of birth stories from characters in mythology and in world religions. Birth stories are found in every culture. Each god, goddess, and religious personality must have been born somehow, and many of their stories have a similar layout in a person from another culture. The birth stories you will be viewing will be of a character from the epics of India, and a comparison story from another religion or mythology.

The Start of the Party

Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, adjusted her clothes and tousled her hair one last time, knowing that there was no need to mess with her appearance, but old habits die hard. Using the large brass door knocker, she banged on the mahogany door. No answer. She waited another few seconds, casually checking her French manicure. She knocked again. Still no answer.

"Honestly," she muttered. "Don't they know not to keep people waiting? I have love matches waiting for me at home!"

Suddenly the door creaked open. Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, peeked his head through. "Sorry for the delay, but as you know 'the greatest patience is humility.' "

Aphrodite smiled. She never quite understood Siddhartha's sayings, but he sure was upbeat! If only he would allow her to find him a soul mate... He handed her a lotus blossom with her name etched so delicately on its petals. After ushering her in, Siddhartha took his post by the door. She looked around the room, checking for familiar faces. About seventy supernatural beings had already arrived, with more due any moment.

She saw her former lover Ares, the Greek god of war, getting into a heated one-sided argument with the Hindu god of destruction, Shiva, trying to determine who had better weapons.

Venus, that Roman-wanna-be goddess of love and beauty, was standing in the corner copying every move she made. Aphrodite laughed inwardly. "Only the originals count," she thought.

Njord, the Norse god of weather, was chatting with Noah about their flood experiences, Noah as a spectator, and Njord as a creator.

Aphrodite moved to the center of the room. She spied the beautiful dark-skinned Isis, Egyptian goddess of motherhood, speaking to Chac, the Mayan god of fertility. She had been meaning to speak to Isis about helping her childless clients but certainly wouldn't approach whilst that reptilian man was speaking so fervently with her.

Sita, the most beautiful Indian woman and avatar of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, stood regally in the corner. Aphrodite tried not to be jealous, as that had not panned out for her well in the past. She sighed and waited for some charmed man to come and try to woo her. That part of her life was never tiring.

At that moment, Jesus stepped into the middle of the crowd. He excitedly clapped his hands.

'Okay everyone! I'm so glad you could make it. This new millennium should be pretty interesting, and it's great we can all share in its birth together!"

The gods and goddesses clapped uproariously. Only Jesus would think to invite every god and goddess in the worlds. He was so sweet.

"And speaking of birth," Jesus said, smiling secretly, "we're going to play a little "get-to-know-you" game! Everyone has already been paired up, so check the underside of your lotus name tag, and you'll see your partner's name." The gods and goddesses shuffled, each trying to find their partner and a comfortable place to sit.

"Drona?" Aphrodite called.
