Well, well. What can I say besides
telling you the obvious fact that I am dead. My name is Sara Beth
Miller and I was only eight years old when a drunk driver killed me. I
lived on Walnut Street
about five blocks from Mr. Spark.
He was a young man. Newly married, if I remember correctly. Mr. Sparks is actually the man who
hit me with his Ford pick up truck.
The last things I vaguely remember were two headlights coming straight
at me, me screaming bloody murder, and then, BAM, I was sent flying
through the air, smashing right into the grill on the front of his
truck. It took me by surprised, and I felt like everything was slow
motion. I felt the pain, but I also felt like I was watching it from an
outside perspective. It was so surreal, like an out-of-body experience.
I finally snapped out of it when I felt the warm blood running down my
arms and legs. I could feel the blood on my fingers as I struggled to
stay conscious. I was only eight years old. I really did not know what
to do other than to keep screaming, just hoping that someone might hear
me. The cold, winter air mixed with my warm oozing blood sent me in and
out of consciousness. My sides felt like I had been kicked repeatedly.
The pain took over me as I lost extensive amounts of blood. Within a
couple minutes, I could not feel anything anymore. My body was numb and
my eyes refused to stay open. I was just smashed and mangled in the
front grill of his truck, and was unable to escape. I lost all feeling
and hope during those five blocks to his house. I could not believe he
still did not realize that he had hit me. I had no idea he was drunk
though. By the time he reached his driveway, I had passed through that
realm of the living verses the non-living. I was now dead.
You are probably wondering what an eight-year-old might be doing
outside past dark. Well, I was always told to come home before the
streetlights came on. But during the winter, the streetlights came on
at five and I forgot. I was at Katy's house just across the street. As
I walked just a couple of steps off the curb, I was struck at a high
velocity. How was I to know that a drunk driver would be driving
through the neighborhood streets at six in the evening?
I was stuck in his grill the entire night until the next morning when
he came outside to drive his truck to work. My ghostly image just stood
in his driveway, staring at my body on the grill of the truck. I was
amazed at his stupidity. Of course, Mr. Sparks was
noble enough to call the police on himself. As the police officers
surrounded his driveway, I stood there on the driveway. I was a faint,
ghostly eight-year-old who would never live the life I had always
dreamed about. And I have you to thanks, Mr. Sparks, for ending my life
so
early!
Author's Note:
The original story did not really give me much to work on, beyond the
fact that a little girl was struck and killed and her body was supposed
stuck to the grill of the truck. There were
many different versions of the story but I figured the story involving
an eight-year old girl and a drunk driver would allow the audience to
connect more with the story. When I first read this story, I already
had some great ideas on how to portary herself stuck inside the grill
and
the accident as a whole. I do not provide any real details about the
driver himself since the narrator was the
little girl. I felt
like there was more to the driver, but of course with the girl being
dead, she will never know. The original story gave many variations of
the same predicament. There are about a total six different stories
that were given on the Snopes website. It even went on to say that one
of the stories was fictionalized into a Television show episode on Law
& Order on January 7, 2004. While writing this story, I wanted the
little girl to sound more intelligent because it would add that
dramatical effect with the audience since she was only rights years old
and killed by a drunk driver. The fact that this story could
really happen out there in the world is why I chose to include it
within
this storybook. I think it is great to get the truths out there about
drinking and driving and its consequences.
