This is Tabitha Dunham and I am reporting live from Moscow as the search to find the best Cinderella woman continues. I am here with Cinderella woman Chernushka to hear her Cinderella story about how her dream came true.

"Well, you are right, Tabitha, my dream did come true,” began Chernushka.” But the real truth is that I never had to dream, until I realized I had nothing left in my life. My father, mother and I were so close and I didn't have a care in the world. It wasn't until my mother died that I realized that I had been living in my own dream world that would soon become a nightmare. My father remarried quickly and my new stepmother was nothing more than a wench. My newly assigned place amongst my new family ,instead of a daughter, was to be the maid. It was then that I woke up from my dream of a happy life and accepted reality instead. I had never felt alone in my life until now. The only friends I had were the two doves that my mother had given me before she died. So at night it was just me, the air coming into the attic from the old window, and the doves.

There was a man, a king of Moscow, by the name of Victor who was the most desired throughout the land. He had everything that one would want in life, though he was in search for one more thing: true love. He was to be holding a ball on the third night of the week in an attempt to fulfill his greatest desire of finding his one true love. My stepsisters saw in King Victor everything that I cared nothing about: money and royalty. They were determined to be the one to tempt Victor at the ball. I only wished that I could go to the ball, and every night I lay awake in bed with no one to talk to but the doves. I just didn’t understand why I couldn’t have my shot to find true love. I couldn’t think of anything better in the world than to find that one true love.

The day of the ball arrived and my sisters and stepmother raced out of the house. I was left alone with an entire house to clean. I rushed upstairs and buried my head in my pillow. It was then that I realized I was not alone. I heard a noise from downstairs and as I came down the staircase I realized that all had been done: the dishes, the floors, even the meals had been prepared. I didn't understand who could have cleaned this entire house. I looked above me and the doves were flying in a circle above my head and I began to spin to follow them. I then looked down and I was beautifully dressed in the most exquisite gown. I continued to spin round and around, laughing out loud. Once I stop spinning I found that I had not only the most beautiful gown, but also the most unique shoes made entirely of crystal. The doves told me that I had to leave the ball before the clock struck midnight, for my appearance would be as it was before, that of a maid. I then rushed out the door to the
ball.

I had never felt as excited as I did when I entered the King’s door. As I made my journey up the long staircase that ascended into the ballroom, I met the eyes of my king from across the room. My shoes then began to catch the light, being that they were crystal, and the glare caught the king’s eyes as he walked across the room to meet me at the stairs. The glare was so great that he fell to the floor at the top of the staircase and then we met face to face as I helped him from the floor. We then danced the entire night and his eyes never left my gaze, until suddenly I heard the clock chime midnight. I knew I had no time to explain and left him immediately. I thought I couldn't get to the door fast enough as my dress suddenly turned to rags. I tripped going down the staircase, but continued forward since I had no time to look behind. It was what I left behind that would ultimately take me forward in my life.

All that King Victor had for an explanation was the crystal shoe that I had left behind, when I tripped during my escape. King Victor didn’t know where to look to find his true love. He first had his palace searched having every maid brought before him to try on the shoe. Then he had his servants go door to door and ask that every woman try on the crystal shoe. He waited patiently for his true love to be discovered. The day arrived when the servants were knocking on our door. My stepmother was furious with me showing up at the ball and since I could give her no explanation as to where the dress and other shoe had gone, I was locked away in hopes that he would forget about me forever. My two stepsisters tried on the crystal shoe but the perfect fit did not exist. The king’s servants then moved on to find his true love.

One night, I stared out my window from the attic when I saw someone coming down the road. It was then that the doves circled around me once more and I began to spin around and around. I was beautifully transformed once more, as the attic door was then thrown open and then entered King Victor. The doves then told me they had sent for my true love and brought him to me. King Victor then took from his jacket the crystal shoe and placed it on my foot. The shoe was a perfect fit and the doves needed not to circle anymore.

“This is yet another amazing Cinderella story, Chernushka. Who would have known that by making him fall for you, he actually fell for you?”

“Yes, this is so true and I owe it all to the shoes. This is why I know I am the best Cinderella woman for the job. It’s all about the perfect fit and the perfect shoes. I want to design the perfect shoes to make someone else's dream come true."

Well, the Cinderella search isn’t over quite yet. Stay tuned to see who the best Cinderella woman is.

Author's note: I kept a lot of the same elements from the original story Chernushka. In the original story Chernushka is a maid who is nicknamed Masha or the “little black girl” due to the soot from the fireplace that she had to clean.  In the original story the king holds three separate balls; Chernushka attended all three and the doves transform her each time. The doves played a key role within the original story as well as they did in mine. The doves in the end after the King and Chernushka are married go on to pluck the eyes out of her stepsisters, leaving them blind. Also in the original story, her stepsister cuts off her toe in order to fit her foot within Cinderella’s shoe, but she is discovered due to the doves. In my story, the king falls at the staircase which sets him up to meet Chernushka, and in the original story the king uses tar on purpose to cause her to lose her shoe. The crystal shoe is not apart of the original story, though I added it to mine to connect the shoe idea throughout my storybook.
