Brown Response

Main Ideas

My brain is fried from all of the school work I have been doing, but it
seems to me that this article is about the fact that as a whole, we are
becoming too dependent on technology.  I know the author mentions such
examples as when he was little listening to the radio, having to call an
operator to contact someone, black and white TV’s and how now we wouldn’t be
able to deal with that.

Gut Reaction

I have given serious thought to matters like this here recently.  I have
started to notice that I am becoming too dependent on technology.  When I
watch movies, I must have them on a DVD, I must be able to use a cell phone,
I don’t like slow computers and slow Internet connections, I get very
irritated if I can’t watch cable, etc.  I think as a whole, society is too
dependent on technology, and that we’re slowly becoming a society with ADD
tendencies.  We are becoming too impatient and expecting too much of things.
I have also noticed that when I was little and didn’t depend on technology
as much, I could write better, and I could definitely spell better.  Now,
all that I have to do is type whatever I need to on a computer, spell check
it and I’m done.  No worrying about good penmanship or spelling for me.
How does this affect school?  Child are having extreme difficulties in
paying attention in class unless something is flashy and catchy (usually
dealing with computers or T.V.), and they too don’t have to worry about
penmanship or spelling.  This produces a nation of people, who like me,
can’t spell worth anything, thus making us rely more on technology to tell
us how to spell.

Questions

1. Do you think society is too dependent on technology?

2. Compare, like the author, your childhood and now.  What differences do
you notice?
