Here is a picture of the Southwest corner of the great building. You can see original stones at the bottom and successive constructions on top of that. On the left is the remains of Robinson's arch, when they found it there was dirt all the way up to the stones just below the arch, all of this was completely covered in dirt. At the base of the wall you can see the stones littering the street. These are the remains of the buildings that were on top of the structure (that is, the admin building and the Second Temple), thrown there by the Romans in 70ce. A decision was made to leave the stones where they were, rather than removing them.
