Let's talk military history for a second. Latrun is an utterly insignificant town on the foothills of a mountain pass. Insignificant, unless you count a military history that includes a battle Joshua fought here. Now, in preparation for the trip I picked up a few books, but the most interesting one I read was the autobiography of Ariel Sharon, published in 1989, well before his Presidency. He fought in '48 here, and lost. Why this spot is so important is that it overlooks and allows control of the road connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. If want control of the major artery of Israel, this is the spot to be in. It is now a military museum and post. I'm going to skip the lengthy back story and just explain what these things are, if you know, then great, and if you want a more in-depth explanation, please contact me. I'll be more than happy to bore you with all the details. So here are some tanks, and the British Police fort is on the right (you know, the one they arbitrarily handed over to Jordanian control in '48 and took till '67 to get. Who says they have their heads up all the way up their ass?).
