Masada. It is a naturally occurring plateau, perfect for Herod to build a palace and storage in case of a siege. He was more than just a little paranoid, so here, in the middle of nowhere, he built a palace capable of withstanding the most prolonged siege. In the center you see the Solela, or Roman Ramp. After a multitude of attempts, the Romans finally decided to just fill in the side of the mountain. It worked.
