Every
Buddy Counts
by Stuart J. Murphy
*This book is a great practice
guide for children and students who are learning their numbers. This book
is a good tool in assisting students in fully understanding the meaning of
numbers. The book takes the reader through a little girl's life as she counts
her buddies. The reader is able to relate to the girl and the story helps
the reader to make counting connections in their own life.
Grade
Level: Pre-K or Kindergarten
Some
good ideas for follow-up activities for the readers:
-
Have the students read
the book backwards, starting at the end. This practice can halp the reader
in perfecting their counting skills.
-
On the last page of the
book is a picutre of all of the girl's buddies. Have the students go through
and try to count, or add, all of the buddies.
-
Have the students make their
own buddy count. Assist, or if able, have the student write the names
of their special buddies on note cards. Have the students draw a picture
of each of their buddies on the cards by the names. Have the students
gather the cards into groups and count the number in each group. For example:
parent, grandparents, peers, playmates, pets, siblings, or stuffed animals.
-
Have the students look at
the things in the real world that surround them. have the students count
and categorize them. Count the number of buttons on a shirt, toothbrushes
in the bathroom, coins on a dresser, plates in the sink, wheel on a bicycle
or car, or toys in a window.
