Pros of college students having a credit card:
- you can establish a good credit score early on
- medical and other emergencies
- able to make travel arrangements
- don’t have as great of a risk of having money stolen as someone who only carries cash
- you are able to shop online and by phone
- able to buy things that otherwise you might not be able to otherwise because you don’t have all the money at the point of purchase
Cons of college students having credit cards:
- their financial inexperience makes them more prone to debt
- a bad credit report can prevent a student from being able to buy a car or house later in life
- credit card debt can hinder a student’s ability to find employment after graduation
- students with credit card debt are likely to have higher interest rates on car loans and mortgages
- excessive debt causes some students to drop out of school
- debt can cause extreme anxiety and distract students from their academics
