On any given day on the campus on the University of Oklahoma it is easy to find someone offering students free rewards such as pizza or t-shirts in return for filling out a credit card application. Although there is no obligation to use the credit card, many students do not know that simply by signing up for a credit card and not using it, they can hurt their credit. If a student has filled out an excessive number of credit card applications they will be seen as financially irresponsible. In the future when such a student tries to take out a loan for a car or a house it may be more difficult for them to qualify because of their bad credit history. Although the credit card solicitors will not inform students of these risks, it is important that students realize that their future is more important that getting a free t-shirt or pizza. Many students have different opinions on whether or not college students should have a credit card. Emily Wood, who is currently a student at the University of Oklahoma, has a debit card rather than a credit card. Emily thinks that students need to be careful when using a credit or even a debit card because although she is only suppose to use hers for emergencies she has been using it more for “stupid stuff”. Fortunately for Emily, she has a debit card which keeps her from spending more money than she actually has. When asked whether or not she thinks students should have credit cards she responded; “If they can pay it off then they should definitely have one.” Another student at OU, Laura Walker, doesn’t believe that college students are mature enough to have credit cards. When asked why, she said; “they will regret it, I use my debit card instead.” Laura also stated that her parents have a Southwest credit card, which earns them frequent flyer miles from using it. She said that if she were to get a credit card, she would want a similar deal, so that she could earn something from using her credit card. Refrences:
