This week, Hanuman
will describe the end
of the battle Lanka between Rama and his army and Ravana and the other
demons. This is after Hanuman had already made the hundred-league
jump to find Sita. This is after Hanuman had already saved Rama and the
others when he retrieved Medicine Hill. The last days of the battle
were the most intense. And now, Hanuman will tell us all about those
last days.
"Well, the last days were the most intense. The
entire battle lasted
over eighteen months. Every day was the same for several months. The
demons
would attack and we would kill them. There was a large army of fierce
monkeys and bears. They could handle most of the demons in one-on-one
battle. Whenever they attacked in groups, it was a sad sight. Sugriva,
Rama, Lakshmana, Jambavan and myself helped out during these group
attacks. Rama could attack the demons from far away, with precisely
placed arrows. Lakshmana was the same way, but he was also very skilled
with a sword. Jambavan would just squeeze large groups of demons to
death. Sugriva and myself fought with everything we could. I remember
seeing Sugriva pick up trees and hit attacking demons. When demons
would invade in large groups I would enlarge myself and step on them,
quickly ending their lives."
"During the last days of the battle,
the attacks were far more intense.
I mean every time I would turn around, there were more demons
vigorously
attacking. I just remember fighting and fighting. I had no regard for
anything but defeating the demons and Ravana. So much happened in those
last days. I lost many friends, some I had known my entire life. That
was the hardest part. All of the warriors fought for Sita, Rama and for
freedom. I don't remember much from those days. I will always feel
saddened by the amount of life lost in that battle. So many demons,
bears and monkeys killed. Bodies were lying all throughout the field."
"Hanuman, do you feel remorseful about the battle?" asked the reporter.
"Remorseful! No! Never! I said I was saddened at the loss of life.
Remorse will never be associated with that battle. We were all fighting
for what was right. We were standing up against an evil tyrant that
thought he could do whatever he wanted. We were standing up for
freedom. We had to fight! We had to win!"
"Now, back to the battle. I don't remember much about the events that
occurred. I have dreams sometimes and I know they are memories coming
back to me. I remember knocking Ravana to the ground once, only to be
immediately attacked. I, and the others, fought with everything that we
had. We gave that battle our all, as it was all or nothing at that
point. That battle changed the world, the heavens and hell forever. I
was devoted to the battle. I fought without sleep or food. I gave my
food to others for their nourishment. I fought when others need to
rest.
I gave the weapons I was using to those who needed them more. I never
backed away from a fight or enemy. I would not have given up in that
battle, unless my life was ended and then my soul would have fought on."
"Hanuman, I'm sorry for the friends
that you lost. I thank you for
your courage to go up against a tyrant like Ravana. You and the others
stood up against a demon who went unchallenged for so long. You made
the world a better place for all to live. Thank you, "said the reporter
as he wrapped up the interview with Hanuman.
Next week will be our final adventure of Hanuman.
The next story will
be from a different Indian Epic, but the same Hanuman will join us. The
following week Hanuman Jayanti will begin. We will have all the details
of events that are occurring across India. There are many events all
across the country, all worshipping the courage and devotion of the
great Hanuman.
Author's Note: I wanted to show the
warrior side of Hanuman with this story. In the previous stories,
Hanuman's more personal side was shown. He is well know for devotion
and courage, and this story shows his courage. Hanuman was a valiant
warrior. Hanuman is shown here standing up against the tyrant Ravana.
This battle also ensured Sita's safe return from the island of Lanka.
This story was not focused on details of the last days of the battle.
It was designed to let Hanuman vent about the events of the battle and
how he really felt about it. It allowed Hanuman to be himself and
discuss his feelings in a different way. There is also not a lot of
interaction with the reporter. I wanted it to seem as if Hanuman was
ranting almost. I really enjoyed writing this story. This story allowed
me to be creative with Hanuman's thoughts. Switching it up a little bit
always keeps things interesting. I am also working on my next story
right now, with a similar style. This story seems to add to the
collection of stories that I have included so far also. The first
person narrative is working very well.
