Allerleirauh

Cordelia had no response to Lauren's contention that she was 'full of herself.'  "Girls," the doctor said warningly.  "Sometimes being beautiful can be a bad thing because people will only like you physically.  So, what can you do?"

"Be proud that everyone thinks you're hot," Cordelia said smirking.

"Not exactly.  Let me tell you about a story what one girl did to escape her beauty because it was a bad thing.

There was a king who had the most beautiful wife in the kingdom.  But the queen became sick and died, while her last words to her husband were that he wasn't to remarry someone less beautiful than she.  The king had no intention of remarrying, but his advisers told him that it was important to do so.  So the kingdom was searched high and low to find a suitable woman as beautiful than the late queen.  The found that the only one who was more beautiful than the old queen was their daughter.

The king's daughter was beautiful in all of the same ways as the late queen.  Once the king saw this, he immediately fell in love with her and told his advisers that he would marry his daughter.  They were shocked to hear this news and told him that it would be the downfall of the kingdom.  The king had already made up his mind.  The princess had been eavesdropping on her father and his counselors and was just as surprised to hear that her own father wanted to have her hand in marriage.  So she devised a plan to get out of the marriage.

The princess told her father that before she would marry, she wanted three dresses to be made.  One dress would be gold as the sun, another silver as the moon, and the third bright as the stars.  She also asked for an animal skin jacket made with all of the different animals in the kingdom.  Surely, these tasks would be impossible and could get her out of the marriage. The king, however, was determined to marry her.  By the end of the month, all that she had wished for was done.  The wedding would be held the very next day.

The princess knew that her only hope not to be married would be to run away.  She took with her the three dresses, the fur jacket, a golden ring, a spinning wheel, and a reel of golden thread.  She then blackened her face with soot and took off in the middle of the night.  She walked until she couldn't take another step and found herself a hollow tree to sleep in.

The next morning a different king, who was out with his huntsmen, found the girl.  At first they thought they found a wild beast because of the various furs,so they decided to capture the creature.  As they started to grab for her, she woke up and screamed and told them she was a poor orphan and begged the men to take her with them.  They took pity on her and told her she could work in the kitchens.  She didn't give them a name and so they decided to call her Allerleirauh.

She worked long hard days doing all of the dirty work in the kitchens.  One day a feast was held and the princess wanted to watch.  She asked the cook and he allowed her thirty minutes.  She ran to her small room and put on her sun dress and washed her face.  The princess looked beautiful.  She went out to the party and danced with the king, who thought she was the most gorgeous woman he'd ever saw.  When the music stopped, the princess gave a curtsy and vanished from sight.

She turned herself back into Allerleirauh again as she rubbed her skin with soot and pulled on her animal jacket.  She then begged the cook to let her make the soup.  As she made the dish the best she could, she secretly slipped her golden ring into the king's soup bowl.  When the king found the ring he demanded to see the cook.  The cook, not wanting to get into trouble, said it was Allerleirauh who made the soup.  The king questioned the girl, but got nothing good from and left her alone.

There were two more festivals later on in the year.  Allerleirauh once again became the princess. AT the second festival, she dressed in her moon dress, then danced with the king.  Then she dropped the spinning wheel in the soup pot.  The king queried her once again, but neither the cook nor Allerleirauh confessed to putting the wheel into his supper.

The third feast was the same.  Allerleirauh dressed in her star dress and danced with the king.  He tried holding on tight to her and sneakily put the golden ring on her finger, but she still vanished as the song ended.  She was later than usual this time in returning to her duties in the kitchen, and had to just throw her animal fur over her dress. In her haste, she failed to completely blacken her skin.

She made the king's dish once again and this time threw the golden reel in it.  When the king inquired, as he always did, the cook and Allerleirauh came out.  The king saw the golden ring on the girl's finger and took hold of her at once.  Her jacket opened a bit, revealing her star dress.  She tried to struggle out of his grip, but he held tight.  He told her she shouldn't be scared and he declared that they would get married.  Allerleirauh was relieved he wasn't mad that she had fooled him.  They were married the next day and lived happily ever after. "

"That's just gross.  How could a father possibly love his daughter sexually?" Cordelia asked.

"Because she was too beautiful.  You see, Cordelia, in a superficial world, looks are everything.  But in the real world, by just using your looks, it can get you into a lot of trouble.  Allerleirauh used her intelligence to get her out of trouble and to make sure she ended up happily ever after instead of being forced into a marriage she didn't want."

Author's Note:

Dr. Sporrenburg felt like she was finally getting through to Cordelia.  Unfortunately for her, the session was over.  She did feel like she helped these girls in some ways such as helping Lauren's self esteem about her appearance, and Amy's too high self esteem.  She almost felt like she even helped Cordelia a little bit, too.  Knowing this she felt a lot better about her work.  Perhaps 'fairy tale therapy' wasn't such a bad idea after all.

I did not really change anything in the story.  I did leave out a lot of detail since the original version had over two thousands words.  It was not easy making such a long story a short one.  I had never heard of this story before this class, but I think not that I have done a lot work with it, it has become my favorite story out of all the ones I have read.  The picture above is a clip of a video on this story.  If you are interested you could check it out to have a visual to my writing.

Well, I hope everyone has enjoyed reading my storybook, and hopefully along the way you learned something about inner beauty.  I really enjoyed doing this and had a lot of fun with it.  I hope everyone had just as much fun reading it as I did writing it.
