How
Brer Rabbit escaped His death from brer fox
by Stephanie Graves
The next morning while Uncle Remus
and
Aunt Jemima were cooking pancakes, they heard a knock at the door.
"You expectin' someone, Jemima?" Uncle Remus asked.
"Naw, honey. The milk man already passed. Are you?" Aunt Jemima replied.
When he opened it, he was greeted by two children. "Good morning, Uncle
Remus!" they sang together.
Uncle Remus laughed and then said, "Come on in, y'all. Come on in."
Then
he shouted to Jemima in the kitchen. "Jemima. Come on here, honey. Lil'
Joe and his friend Jane are here."
Jemima hurried to the front room. "Good morning, you two. Are y'all
hungry?"
"Oh yes, ma'am. We can eat," Lil' Joe replied and directed for Jane to
follow Aunt Jemima to the kitchen.
When Lil' Joe and Uncle Remus were alone, Lil' Joe motioned for Remus
to come close. "Look at what I brought for you Uncle Remus. It's one of
my toy rabbits Mama brought me."
"Well Joe, that's real nice. I guess it can go with the fox you gave me
already. How 'bout you and Jane get some pancakes and milk and I'll
tell y'all a story about Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit. Would you like
that?" Uncle Remus asked as he sat the rabbit on the shelf with the toy
fox Joe had gave him earlier that week.
Uncle Remus sat in the front room waiting for the children to return
with the milk and pancakes. As they came from the kitchen, the children
sat on the bench next to the fireplace and faced Uncle Remus with
curious looks on their faces.
"Y'all ready?" Uncle Remus asked the two children. They nodded yes with
a mouth full of food.
"Well, deep down in the Forest there lived Brer Bear, Brer Fox,
Brer Bird, and Brer Squirrel. One day, Brer Bird was flyin' and he saw
two grown rabbits an' dey fo'r child'en. Brer Bird flew back to where
the others were and told them what he had seen.
'I seen six rabbits walking by the river. I think they lost.' Everyone
looked at each other with a look of concern on they faces.
Brer Bear said, 'We must all go introduce ourselves to the new family
and see if they need help.' Then everyone, except Brer Fox, started
following Brer Bird as he flew towards the river.
Just then Brer Bear walked up to the family of rabbits and introduced
himself. 'Hello, my name is Brer Bear and these are my friends. We have
come to welcome you to the neighborhood. Here we are all friendly and
helpful. So if you need anything, please ask.' After his introduction,
the other animals of the forest introduced themselves.
'Would you all like to join us for a picnic tomorrow? It's a good way
for us to teach you where everything is and how to get to all the
necessary places.'
After the Brer Rabbits agreed, they all said goodnight and went to bed.
The next morning, Mr. and Mrs. Rabbit had awakened real early and went
looking for some food. When they returned, they got the children ready
and headed for the river.
Once they arrived, they noticed an unfamiliar face. It was Brer Fox.
Brer Rabbit walked up to him and introduced himself, 'Hi, Brer Fox.
It'a
a pleasure to meet you. I'm ...'
'I know who you are, Brer Rabbit. How would you like to join me for
dinner tomorrow? I can make some mean carrot cake. What do ya say?’
'Of course! What do I bring?’ Brer Rabbit asked excitedly.
’Oh, nothing. This is my treat for you. Bring just yourself. I’ll take
care of the rest. How about we meet at my place… just down past the
river bank.’
That’s just fine by me. I’ll see ya just as soon as the sun goes down,’
Rabbit said.
They shook hands and then parted, returning to their families and
enjoying the picnic.
.
The following morning, Rabbit told his wife about having dinner with
his new friend Brer Fox.
You be careful, okay, Rabbit? That Brer Fox sure does seem sneaky. How
about you go check out his place? If he’s really cooking, you should
smell something comin’ outta his house,’ Mrs. Rabbit said with a
warning tone.
Brer Rabbit took his wife’s advice and went hopping along. When he
peeped in Brer Fox’s window, he saw all kinds of rabbit seasonings by
the stovetop.
’Oh no! He gonna try to eat me. What should I do?’ Rabbit said to
himself out loud as he ran back to tell his wife what he had discovered.
His wife was not surprised. “I got an idea. Let’s plant a trap to snap
his beautiful red tail right in Mr. Jennings vegetable garden. That
should teach him something.’
Brer Rabbit did just that. He set a trap and then hurried along to Brer
Fox’s place so he would not be late.
He knocked on the door. Fox answered and invited him in. Brer Rabbit
hesitated. “I need some carrots, Fox. I haven’t eaten a thing all day.
Will you come with me to pick some?’
Fox agreed and they went to Mr. Jennings’ garden. Rabbit scurried
along through the garden with ease and led Brer Fox towards the trap.
Just as Fox bent over to pick some carrots, Rabbit jumped down on the
trap and it closed down on Fox’s tail. Brer Fox let out a huge scream
and then cried to Rabbit to let him loose.
‘ Would you like to be someone’s dinner? I did not want to do it but
you left me no choice. I am nobody’s dinner so you apologize right now
before you become someone else's dinner,’ Brer Rabbit demanded.
After seeing Mr. Jennings hurrying to where he was located, Fox let out
a few more cries and then apologized. ‘ I am sorry, Brer Rabbit. I
promise to not eat you if you let me loose. Please! I promise!’
Brer Rabbit let Brer Fox go and Fox ran home. He never tried to eat
Brer Rabbit anymore. Actually, he started to bring Brer Rabbit and his
family a carrot cake each month. Tha end!
Jane said, "I like the story. It had a nice ending."
"I knew you would," Uncle Remus told her.
"Thanks for the story Uncle Remus." Joe said.
"No problem. Come over tomorrow." Uncle Remus said.
Author's Note:
Within this story, I decided to
change its plot and also characters. I added characters and decided for
Rabbit to get back at the Fox. I did this because I wanted the rabbit
to teach the fox a lesson.
Also I decided to use a story concerning the rabbit and fox because
those are the two stuffed animals that Joe has brought to Uncle Remus
so far. Basically all of the stories will involve the new stuffed
animal that Joe brings over.
All in all this story ended this way to teach others that if you want
to eat something, there is no reason to trick them. If it was mean't to
be then you would be able to catch them and then eat them.
