HOW BRER RABBIT MILKED SIS' COW DRY

By Stephanie Graves
The next day Uncle Remus took it upon himself to make a chocolate pie
because that was Joe's favorite.
"Jemima, do we have any flour or
milk layin' 'round here?" Remus yelled into the kitchen.
Jemima yelled, " The flour's in
the cabinet an' the milk... we ain't got none. I'm waiting for Mr.
Brown to deliver it." She looked at the clock and said, "He should be here any
minute now."
Minutes passed before Mr. Brown
showed with the milk. "I'm sho' glad you delivered this here milk. I'm
bakin' Joe a cake."
"Well, have fun with that,
Remus.
I'll see you and Jemima in the morning," Mr. Brown said, waving while
going to the neighbor's house. Uncle Remus waved back and went into the
kitchen to get started.
An hour later there was a knock
at the door. Jemima opened the door and greeted Joe, "Hi, Joe. How are
you doing, sweetie?"
"Fine, Ms. Jemima. It sure
smells good. Did you bake another chocolate cake?" Joe said, licking
his
lips and rubbing his tummy.
"No, Uncle Remus is. It's for
you so go check it out." She nudged Joe towards the kitchen door.
"Good afternoon, Uncle Remus,"
Joe said walking up to Uncle Remus and giving him a hug.
Uncle Remus hugged him back,
"Hey Joe," he said, and then he picked up the iced cake and presented
it to Joe.
"It's a chocolate cake for you. I hope you like it."
Joe didn't waste any time going
for a knife, plate, and fork. "Can I have glass of milk to go with my
cake?" he asked.
"Of course you can," Uncle Remus
responded, grabbing Joe a cup and the milk.
When Remus returned, Joe handed
him a little plastic, toy cow. "I found this while I was walking over
here. 'Milk,
it does a body good!' Is that right, Uncle Remus?"
"Don't ask me, you should ask
the Sis' Cow. She's the one who got milked dry and hurt for days,"
Uncle Remus replied.
"One day while Sis' Cow was
mindin' her business in the fields, Brer Rabbit decided to come and
mess with her. 'Hey there, Sis' Cow. How's it going today?' Brer Rabbit
said, hopping over the fence .
'Oh, my day is just fine. How
'bout your's, Rabbit?' she said, munching on some grass.
'Oh, I'm fine. I just need to
find something for the children to drink. They are wore out from all
this heat,' Brer Rabbit said, fanning at himself.
'I'm so sorry to hear that,
Rabbit. How 'bout some fresh squeezed lemonade? There are some
wonderful lemons in this tree. I can get them down for you.' She said,
nodding her head towards the tree next to her.
Brer Rabbit thought to himself.
He would rather have her milk to drink but she's not gonna let him so
he said, 'Sure, Sis' Cow. I sure would appreciate your help. My
children would be so thankful,' Rabbit said, with a sly grin.
"What would you like for me to
do, Rabbit?" She asked. "Would you like to stand on my back, and climb
the tree?"
"Uh-uh." He said, shaking his head. "Why don't you just run towards the
tree hard enough so the lemons will shake from the tree, " Rabbit
suggested.
Sis' Cow scooted back and
then
ran towards the tree with full force. Then lots of lemons fell, but
only a few were yellow. She then scooted further back and ran as fast
as she could and then lots of yellow lemons fell.
"Why thank you, Sis' Cow. You
are the best,' Brer Rabbit said, hoping his trick had worked.
'Um, Rabbit. Can you help me? I
think I'm stuck,' Sis' Cow said in a frightened tone.
Brer Rabbit walked next to her
and told her he would be back with help. Minutes later, he came back
with his family and each had their own pails. "Milk away. We gonna have
plenty of milk to last us for days.' The children all cheered and went
away milkin' Sis' Cow of her every and last drop. Then when they was
all done, they left her there, tired and feeling restless.
The next morning, Brer Rabbit
realized she was still there. 'Aww. Poor Sis' Cow. You not doing so
good,'
He snickered.
'Oh, Rabbit. You just wait until
I catch you. Ohhh, you just wait!' she screamed at him.
Brer Rabbit walked up to the
other side of the tree so she could see him. "Ha ha ha ha ha . You
can't catch me." Then he hopped, skipped and jumped his way down the
road. The end.
"I love that story, Uncle
Remus," Joe said with his mouth full of chocolate cake. "What ever
happened to Sis' Cow?"
"Uncle Remus took a sip of his
milk and said, "Two days later she got loose, with the help of Bro'
Bull. And then they went chasing after Rabbit."
"Did they catch him?" Joe said
with amazement.
"No, they still probably looking
for him. That Rabbit is just too fast for them."
Joe looked at the clock and
realized he was gonna be late for Sunday school. "Well, I gotta go to
church. Wait until my mom tastes this cake. She's gonna ask you for
another cake," Joe said putting on his jacket, then hugging both Remus
and Jemima before he left out the door.
After he left, Remus pulled out
another cake and cut both himself and Jemima a slice. They sat and
talked
while eating cake and drinking milk for hours...
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
I
have decided to keep the same plot but change the ending. In the
original story, both Sis' Cow and Bro' Bull were after Brer Rabbit. I
thought it
would be better to do that so that I could show how Brer Rabbit got
away
once again by tricking someone. Also I decided that it would be a good
idea for Uncle Remus to bake a cake for Lil' Joe. This not only
shows that Uncle Remus can cook, but that Joe is very special to
Uncle Remus.
