English 1113 Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Unit 5 Assignments Calendar Tip of the Day The Freshman English requirement at the University of Oklahoma is a
two-semester sequence of courses designed to help the student become a better
writer. All assignments will emphasize that purpose. 1113 introduces students to
academic discourse that they will be required to write in various class here at
the University of Oklahoma and to strategies for composing within this
discourse. Important characteristics of academic discourse addressed in 1113
include reporting and analyzing information. To produce discourse with these
characteristics, students need to think and read critically as well as use a
wide range of composing strategies for various rhetorical situations common in
academic writing. These strategies include ways of inventing, drafting,
revising, and editing. Additionally, critical reading skills are taught in order
to help students develop their abilities at analyzing and evaluating texts,
whether they are oral, professionally published, or written by peers.
Course Objectives After successful completion of ENGLISH 1113, students should be able to do the following: identify various types of writing, recognize the symbolism and imagery in various types of writing, recognize the main ideas, central themes, and supporting details in written materials, effectively and critically read various types of written materials, understand, recognize, and use various rhetorical devices to achieve desired effects, choose words that are precise and effective, understand how to effectively use a dictionary and thesaurus, recognize that your professor is the best at what he does. |
