Horror stories have been a part of our culture for centuries. Over time
these stories change, and new twists are put on each one. For my
storybook project I have decided to choose stories that will scare you,
and leave you with an unsettling chill you cannot get rid of. Most of
these stories have been around for many years, with different twists in
each new version of the story told. Snopes.com is a site dedicated to
urban legends. An urban legend is a story involving incidents of the
past that are usually passed around as being true. While some urban
legends are true and some untrue, one thing for sure, they will all
leave you questioning whether or not you should believe them. The
stories I choose are absolutely no different. They all will leave you
trembling in your seat.
I am choosing to use stories about murderers. A lot of the teenage
horror movies of our generation are based off of these stories, and if
not these specific then stories similar to these. I will be telling
the stories through the eyes of the people involved in the murder
stories. Not through the eyes of the murderer himself, but through the
eyes of his targets. All of these stories are urban legends that have
been researched to determine if they are factual or not. Whether they
are or not, they all have been believed true by someone before. This is
because they are truly scary, and they focus on that which haunts our
dreams.
I have focused on these stories because stories like these have always
intrigued me. Ever since I was a kid I have been in love with haunting
stories. I grew up watching shows like "Are you Afraid of the Dark,"
and reading book like Goosebumps. Now as I am older I seem to be immune
to the horror books and movies bring. That is why I have chosen to do
horror stories as my storybook. I want to attempt to bring the horror
back to them. If I think they are scary I think that they will terrify
the normal person.
The story titled "Aren't You Glad You Didn't Turn on the Light?"
will surely scare everyone who lives in a dormitory. The story is based
in a college dorm, where a girl returns to her room only to find her
roommate dead. I will attempt to put myself into the shoes of the
roommate, and give the reader everything going through her head as she
found this terrible scene. Also, the story of "The Boyfriend's Death"
is
painfully haunting. Imagine what goes through the mind of the
girlfriend
who, after running out of gas, found her boyfriend murdered. Every girl
has been in the car with her boyfriend. If the car you were in ran out
of gas what would you do? This story will definitely change your mind,
and make you think twice if you were ever put in this situation.
Both of these stories are based on things that happen in the life of
teenagers all of the time. Most kids that go to college live in a dorm.
Just imagine if you had stories like these to tell. It would
drastically change your life. That's why I have chosen to tell the
stories as if I were the people involved. I want to show the reader the
story of the victim, as well as the other people involved in the story
and targeted by the murderer. By putting the stories in first person I
can help the reader relate to the story. Hopefully they will put
themselves as the character in the story and then start to imagine the
things happening. By creating this in the mind of the reader it will
surely help scare them, and create a fear in them they haven't had
before.
