(Just a quick note about Norse names. There are several different spellings and alternate names of many of the Norse gods and goddesses. I am listing the spellings that I will be using in my storybook)

 

 

The Nine Worlds of the Norse Universe

Yggdrasill - the "World Tree." It supports the universe and connects the nine worlds.

Key players: Gods, Goddesses and Monsters

Odin - lord of the gods.
  • Wife=Frigg
  • Children (by Frigg)=Hermod, Hod, Balder
  • Children (in some traditions) by Erda, goddess of Earth and mother of valkyries=Thor and Tyr
  • Children (by Rind, a giantess)=Vidar and Vali
  • Animals= Sleipnir, the eight legged horse; two ravens, Hugin ("thought") and Munin ("memory)

    Frigg - mother goddess. She is the main character in my frametale..

    Fulla - handmaiden, messenger, and sister (in some translations) of Frigg. She is the other main character of my frametale.

     

    Balder - the dying god. Considered to be the most beautiful of the gods.

  • Children=Forseti
  • Brothers=Hermod and Hod
  • Parents= Odin and Frigg

    Hermod - messenger of the gods.

     

    Hod - the blind god. God of winter and darkness.

     

    Tyr - god of war. Brother of Thor.

    Thor - god of thunder and lightning
  • Wife=Sif
  • Children (by Sif)=Thrud, goddess of power and strength
  • Children (by the giantess Jarnsaxa)=Magni and Modi
  • Heimdal - guardian of the gate of Asgard.

    Frey - god of light, fertility. One of the Vanir that were adopted into the Aesir .
  • Twin sister=Freya
  • Messenger=Skirner
  • Aeger - god of the sea

    Freya - goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Another Vanir adopted into the Aesir.
  • Twin brother=Frey

    Loki - the trickster and shape-shifter. Loki was not an Aesir, but a Giant. He was a blood-brother to Odin and resided among the Aesir.
