The Werewolf Strap

Caged Werewolf

Author: David Love

Let me tell you a story about how I ended up here in this dark, cold, and wet cell. It was 1840, in the mid-spring on a sunny day. I had already been without food for ten days and I was ready to give up and die. Then out of nowhere a man appeared before me. I should have been skeptical when I noticed that he had horns and a tail, but that is not here nor there.

The man introduced himself as Lucifer. He told me that if I would wear this strap that he had, I would never have to go hungry again. I was skeptical at the time, but I was also really hungry. I mean come on, all I have to do is put on this strap and I would no longer go hungry? I figured I had nothing to lose, so I agreed to put on the strap.

Before giving me the strap, Lucifer told me that no one was to call out my name while I was wearing the strap. If so, I would risk major harm to myself. I should have realized at that time that this was a bad idea. However, I agreed and put on the strap. I no more finished putting on the strap and all of a sudden my body ached. I watched as my hair began to grow at a rapid rate and my entire body structure changed. When I asked Lucifer what had happened, he told me that I was now a Werewolf for life. He told me that I would never be able to get rid of the strap for as long as I lived.

Every since that day I have been haunted by the strap. I have tried burning it, but it just jumps right out of the fire. When I am hungry it draws me to it as if it were a drug. I have spent the last twenty years feeding off of the Shepherds’ livestock. Then one day my cousin called my name while I was attacking the livestock. He had seen the Werewolf, and was calling out to warm me. I instantly turned back to my human form and was severely beaten by the Shepherds watching the livestock that night. Afterward, they dragged me here and I have been here ever since. I am able to take the strap off, but when my stomach begins to ache I’mdrawn to putting it back on.

Authors Notes:

I chose to tell the story in the first person, as if I were the Werewolf. The stories are legends from Germany. There were a lot of stories collected by F. Asmus and O. Knoop that I used as a guideline for telling the story. I created a story based around the wolf strap used in the other stories and the transformation that occurs if the Werewolf’s name was called. The wolf strap is something that I was unfamiliar with. Nor have I ever seen it in any movies. I guess there are not too many legends about the wolf strap.
