Lucy Locket

Lucy Locket

Mom began reading what I knew was going to be a very short story, but I was very interested in this Lucy girl!

"Lucy Locket lost her pocket,
Kitty Fisher found it;
Nothing in it, nothing in it
But the binding round it."

"What is the big deal about this pocket?" I asked my mother.

"Well... I am not really sure. I bet there was something important in it!" she replied.

"Hmmm... I wonder what she had. I wonder if that Kitty Fisher stole it!" I was beginning to let my imagination take over my thoughts.

"Maybe so," my mom said. "I will let you think about it while falling to sleep. Good night, my dear, and sweet dreams."

All the possibilities were running through my head! Kitty was just acting like Lucy's good friend, when she was really a thief! If only Lucy knew about all of this! What would she do...

Julie began to fall deep into sleep, but she is known for her creative and colorful dreams! So let's go in and check on that busy mind of hers!

"Silence in my courtroom!" I heard a loud voice call as the gavel pounded to the desk.

I looked around the room as quickly as possible! I had no idea where I was! There were two young ladies each sitting at a desk. One desk was to the left and the other to the right of two tiny swinging doors that separated a large crowd, which included me, from the select few in the front area. I was in a courtroom! I had never been in one, but I knew from all the episodes of Judge Judy that this is where I was.

Now, I needed to know why I was there. The court began to call people to the stand. The first witness was Lucy Locket. Lucy rose from her seat, and walked up to the witness stand with a saddened look on her face. This was surely the case I had hoped for! Lucy was about to find out who stole her pocket!

A nice-looking gentleman walked up to the stand, and began questioning Lucy.

"Please state your name once again for the judge, and tell us your story," he said.

"My name is Lucy Locket, and I am here today to claim what is rightfully mine! My ex-friend Kitty Fisher stole my pocket which held my money and my grandmother's locket!"

"How do you know all of this information about Ms. Fisher?" the lawyer asked.

"Well, my witness here today is Penny Finn. She heard all of the details come straight from Kitty's mouth the day after Kitty brought back my empty pocket." Tears began to flow down Lucy's face as she told the story.

"Well, that will be all of the questions for you today, Ms. Locket. Penny Finn, will you please take the stand now?" the judge said as she noticed Lucy's tears.

Penny took the stand, and Kitty's lawyer stated the questions this time. "Ms. Finny," he began, "what proof do you have that my client, Ms. Fisher, took the belongings of Ms. Locket's pocket?"

"The next day at school, after Kitty gave her the empty pocket, we heard about the so-called pocket thief! All of us were very nervous about the new thief at school, so we kept our belongings very close. Kitty then came to me after the group broke apart into separate smaller conversations and told me we had nothing to fear."

The crowd leaned in to hear more of Penny's exciting story.

"I was very confused by her statement, so I asked what she meant by this. Her exact response was 'I took Lucy's pocket! I have always wanted that locket!'"

The crowd was shocked, and uproar began in the courtroom! "SILENCE!!! SILENCE!!!" we all heard the judge say.

The room quieted down, and Penny moved back to her seat. "Do you have anything to disprove this conversation, Ms. Fisher?" the judge asked.

"No, ma'am..." Kitty responded with sobs of her own this time.

"Then the ruling is for Ms. Fisher to return ALL of the pocket's belongings, along with a heart-felt apology! Court is now dismissed," the judge declared.

As the gavel hit the desk once more, I awoke from my courtroom dream to another day of school and afternoon play time. What will the other Mother Goose stories bring to my dreams later this week...

Author's Note: For my first story, I chose to write about the story of Lucy Locket and her lost pocket! I plan on doing a different storytelling method for each dream of Julie's, and I felt like this nursery rhyme was a great starting point for a court case. Since the rhymes are so short, I was able to have a lot of creativity with my story. I wrote the original story at the beginning too just to refresh readers about the original nursery rhyme. Parts of the dream also highlight part of the original too! Lucy Locket, Kitty Fisher, and the pocket are all original ideas for the story. They each play their original roles too! I added the money and the locket to the story to show how the pocket was used. I feel like this is a big detail from the original that is missing! I also added the character Penny Finn! I felt like this would make it more like a courtroom with an actual witness! Penny also serves as a close friend to both girls, but in the end she sides with Lucy. At the end of the story, readers also see Kitty crying. I felt like she deserved a little break! She is just a girl, and we always need to show a little compassion for people who do not know any better.
