A Wage and Salary Survey is very important when considering any job.  Wage and Salary Surveys can give you an average wage/salary, as well as a high and low wage/salary for the job you are trying to attain.  It is important to know these ranges because they tell you whether your job offer is comparable to the going market rate and they also give you leverage to try and negotiate a higher wage/salary.  These surveys will also give you a benchmark figure to make sure that your wage is appropriate for the cost of living you desire in your geographic area.

Negotiation

Negotiation is probably the single most important thing an aspiring insurance agent should consider when interviewing with a company.  According to a professor of Management at the University of Oklahoma " The number 1 reason why people do not get a higher starting pay is simply because they do not ask for it!!" (Dr. Russell, 2001)  What people fail to realize is that when they do not attempt to negotiate their salaries they automatically close the door for a possibility of a pay increase.  Anyone can negotiate their salary.  If you try negotiations and you are not successful you must realize that you have not lost any ground.  By negotiating you can only go forward, you will not receive any negative consequences for at least trying.  If you are afraid the company will think you are too greedy, you are mistaken.  They already think you are good for their company or they would not be offering you a position and a starting salary to begin with!!  Don not be afraid to push for the salary you want. YOU CAN DO IT!
