Lorina Talks to the Mad Hatter

Lorina felt like she had been walking for quite some time and was beginning to worry, when she finally spotted the house Alice had directed her towards. She was quite nervous to meet the Mad Hatter; she didn't really know much about him, after all.  She anxiously went up to the house and knocked on the door.

"Who is it and what do you want?" a stern voice yelled back at her.

"Hello sir. My name is Lorina. My sister, Alice, sent me to come talk to you. I believe you two met the last time she was in town, er, in Wonderland I mean," Lorina said, trying to keep her voice as calm as she could.

After a few moments, which felt like a lifetime to Lorina, the door opened and the Mad Hatter stepped out onto the porch. "Well, what is it that you want?"he said.

Lorina took a deep breath, and began explaining how she and Alice had come to Wonderland and were hoping to have another tea party. She explained that she didn't fully believe her sister when she told her about this strange place, but eventually gave in and well, here she was. She explained how they had chatted with the White Rabbit and he was already busy planning the tea party as they spoke. Finally she explained how she found out that they could not have a tea party without his attendance. "I just love tea parties so much and I would love to be able to attend one with you, sir," Lorina said.

"A tea party huh. Well, let me ask you this. Do you want to attend a tea party or does a tea party want you to attend?" the Hatter questioned.

Lorina thought for a moment, and replied, "That doesn't quite make sense. I do not believe that a tea party has feelings so I am not sure if it would want me to attend. I would hope so! But, I am not quite sure what you are meaning."

"Well, I am not quite sure what you are meaning, dear. But any who, this tea party you would like to have, have you talked to the Dormouse? Or more importantly, have you talked to Time to find out when it will occur? He does seem to get upset when people plan things without his knowing. Time really doesn't have all the time in the world you know.  Well, actually he does, but that's besides the point."

Lorina and the Hatter chatted a bit more back and forth about what Lorina thought was non-sense, but she was slightly afraid of the Hatter so she decided to agree with everything he said. He told Lorina about the tea party that Alice had come to, and how it had turned out to be dreadful because it was never ending. "Alice was smart to leave when she did, because we drank tea until six o'clock."

"I thought it started at six o'clock. That seems like a quite short tea party if you ask me," Lorina said.

"Well, if only you would have listened to me about the whole importance of Mr. Time, Lorina, you would have realized that six o'clock lasted for what felt like an eternity," he impatiently explained. He went on to say, "Your hair doesn't need to be cut. I told Alice to cut her hair. I think it is too long. She needs to take a lesson from you on how to style her hair."

Lorina was caught off guard with that statement. One moment they were talking about Time being a real person and the next the Hatter was telling her he liked her hair style. "What have I gotten myself into by coming to this magical place?!" she thought. "Well, thank you, Mad Hatter. I will most definitely tell Alice to cut her hair like mine," she said to him.

They chatted a bit more and he eventually agreed to attend a tea party that would happen promptly at six o'clock, of course, only because he had made up with Time and would be able to set the party for whenever they liked.

"Why don't we go talk to the Dormouse and see if he would be able to join us for the tea party? What do you think?" the Hatter said to Lorina. He liked Lorina very much. "She seems much more polite than her sister. I enjoy her company quite a bit," he thought to himself.

"We? As in you and me?" Lorina said a bit nervously, because she really was wanting to get back to Alice. But, she couldn't come up with an excuse fast enough so she finally replied, "Sure! I would just love to go with you to talk to the Dormouse."

"Good. There really must be two people when talking to him. One person must keep him awake while the other converses," he said as they began walking to the Dormouse's house.

Lorina was trying to remain calm as she was walking with the Hatter. She was a bit overwhelmed by this place, but she kept reminding herself how much she loved tea parties so of course all this nonsense was worth it if she got to have her tea party in the end. "Oh I hope so," she thought.

Author's Note: My third story focuses on Lorina and the Mad Hatter meeting. Because Lorina was barely in Carroll's version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, my version is very different. I have developed Lorina's character a lot and included many encounters with her and other characters that did not happen in the original story. For this particular story, I used information from Chapter 7 of Carroll's version which was when the Mad Hatter and the March Hare were introduced. Although, I did leave out a lot of information, I tried to portray the original Mad Hatter's personality. Also, in the original story, Chapter 7 had the Mad Hatter and the March Hare and with my version I combined the two characters into one and just used the Hatter.  Also, I included that the Hatter made up with Time and therefore was no longer stuck at the original tea party. This helped me be able to set up the story for Lorina's tea party. My version has the Hatter explaining a few of the events that happened in the original story. In my version, the Hatter likes Lorina much more than Alice because she is less spunky and more polite.
