Varaha is the third avatar that Vishnu transforms into in order to preserve life upon earth and throughout the universe. However, in order to do this, he first had to slay the demon Hiranyaksha who kept Mother Earth captive in the ocean's abyss. Mother Earth sank from all the sins of life upon her. Vishnu transformed into another animal form in order to restore balance in the universe. These animal avatars represent the animal's abilities or strengths to defeat certain evil counterparts. A boar is considered a formidable animal being very hard to kill. Vishnu uses the animal forms to transport himself into mortal realms. Vishnu incarnated into a boar to be able to transport Mother Earth from the ocean bed on its tusks while purifying her by his touch.

Brahma, the first being, created a sage, Kashyap, who married four women. The first wife, Diti, bore two demon children, called Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu.
Both had limitless powers and strengths. The second wife, Aditi, gave him two god children. His third wife, Vinita gave him Garuda, the carrier for Vishnu. Finally, his fourth wife gave him the hydras. The youngest son of Diti named Hiranyaksha was a bully of a demon that went around tormenting the other gods in search of the ultimate battle showdown. Hiranyaksha was creating havoc across the worlds and heavens while spreading his evil. When Hiranyaksha praised Brahma, he was given immunity from death by human or animals. Many gods were afraid to stop him, so Brahma sanctioned only one animal that could stop him and kill him. The boar was the only animal to which Hiranyaksha was not immune.
Earth submergedWhile Mother Earth was submerged in the great water abyss. Hiranyaksha went forth to seek out the lord of the ocean. He asked him to battle over the prize of Mother Earth, but the ocean lord denied him the duel. The ocean lord did want to battle because of his age. This outraged Hiranyaksha, but the ocean lord told him about a god that would be worth fighting. He spoke the name of Varaha.  So Brahma using one of his nostrils blew out Varaha, the boar, which was miniature in size. Varaha was watching the assaults of Hiranyaksha and started to grow to a gigantic size. Varaha plunged into the ocean and found Mother Earth. He gently lifted her onto his tusks and by doing this purified her from her sins. They began to rise to the surface to escape her watery prison. As Varaha reached the surface, he heard the audacious insults of the demon.

Hiranyaksha watching VarahaHiranyaksha being a spoiled demon prone to throwing tantrums began taunting and insulting Varaha in order to provoke a fight with him. Varaha knowing this demon needed to be destroyed spoke to the demon, "I will destroy you for committing several of the deadly sins." Hiranyahsha responded, "What sins?" Varaha told him that he has committed pride, envy, gluttony, anger and greed. These sins were his down fall. Varaha sat Earth in a safe place and came charging at Hiranyaksha. The battle lasted 1,000 years even with Hiranyaksha using all of his powers and weapons, but Varaha used his tusks and pierced the demon, which caused the earth to quake.  With this final blow, Hiranyaksha fell backwards whispering the name, Vishnu. He sank in the ocean and was lost forever into the black, watery abyss. Varaha returned to Mother Earth to Brahma and helped Earth to shape the lands and mountains to sustain life for humans. This was the creation of Earth as we know it.

Author's Note:
Well, I have included the first three avatars of Vishnu now in my storybook: Mastya, Kurma and Varaha. Vishnu represents the center balance of peace and tolerance during the first age, or satya-yuga. I have seen in my last three chapter's sort of creation myths taking place. Creation of life from chaos, the separation from the gods and life evolving upon the earth. Vishnu and his avatar of Varaha are considered an ultimate Super Being and represents resurrection for a new cycle of life and earth. Vishnu avatar's are considered to be arbitrators for humans and even between gods and demons. Mastya and Kurma avatars were needed to help support and guide the land within the oceans. Varaha was a land animal that could only lift the great earth from the ocean with its tusks. Boars have a tough outer skin that helps them survive when trying to be killed, which helped Varaha sustain a battle with a demon. So all in all, this is like evolution in a sense. Evolution is considered started from the smallest ocean life form to land animals then onto human life.
