Characteristics of Appaloosa's

Size: According to the American Indian elders: the appaloosa ranged from 14 to over 16 hands, but the average was 14.2 to 15.2 hands. The horses had to be mounted from the ground and a horse of 14.2 or 15 hands was perfect for quick maneuvering and provided superior agility and swiftness. The average weight is 800 to 1100 lbs.
Color Characteristics:
The Appaloosa is generally defined with four
characteristics:
1)Coat pattern: Varies from a solid color with a white
blanket over loin and hips with contrasting spots varying from small single
spots to large spots with halo rings around them. Spots should be clearly
defined as such and should not be large patches of color like a Paint or Pinto
type horse. Horses can also be of the roan or leopard type with either a
roaning pattern with small white or dark spots present or a solid white base
with spots over the entire body. Solid color bases include Bay, Bay Roan,
Black, Blue Roan, Buckskin, Chestnut, Dark bay or Brown, and Dun. Gray is
undesirable.
2) Mottled Skin is a unique characteristic and is only found in the Appaloosa. Mottled skin is different from Pink (flesh colored or non-pigmented) skin in that it normally contains small dark spots (pigmented skin) within its area. It is therefore a speckled pattern of pigmented kin found often around the nose and lips, around the eyes and in the genitalia area of both mares and stallion and in the dock of the tail.
3) White sclera is a unique feature and it defines the white area that completely encircles the eye. It should be easily seen and defined.
4) Striped hooves are bold with clearly defined vertically light and dark striped horn. Some horses that have white markings on the legs directly above the hoof show only lightly colored vertical lines of the dark horn.
Gait:
The appaloosa is versatile and strong, noted for great endurance they posses the
three main gaits of the walk, trot, and canter. With a well sloping
shoulder and powerful rear impulsion, the Appaloosa is not limited within these
three. The extended trot is also very apparent among many
Appaloosas. The smoothness of the ride and elegant forward motion allows
the Appaloosa to cover ground effortlessly and quickly. Collection,
extension, and bursts of speed are easily managed by the rider. Appaloosas
with grace and elegance pick up their feet with smooth action that prepares them
to cover any terrain changes or obstacles without hampering cadence or balance
of any gait.
Temperament: The appaloosa temperament is one that has been prized for generations by its owners. Exhibiting incredible endurance, stamina, strength, tolerance for change, high intelligence and curiosity with wonderful heart and spirit.
Disposition and Character: Above
all else, the Appaloosa is a people pleaser and
loves contact in social
circles. They are curious, respectful, and gentle. Stallions in
particular are extraordinarily gentle, alert, and friendly. Appaloosas are
smart, fun, and enjoy learning new things. They make excellent companions
and loyal partners in any discipline.
