Hanuman: Monkey of the Year

Reported by Chaitanya, The Ayodhya Times

Due to his devotion and strength, Hanuman has been named Monkey of the Year.  Nominated by King Rama for his loyalty during the war against Ravana, Hanuman is most deserving of this prestigious title.  He has completed many tasks and accomplished unbelievable feats in his lifetime, but his perseverance and integrity are what define him.  Hanuman exemplifies the power of devotion and inspires others to action.
Born to Anjana and Vayu, the wind god, Hanuman is believed to be the incarnation of the Lord Shiva.  Hanuman's birth released his mother Anjana from a curse that caused her to assume the form of a female monkey.  When Anjana asked what would become of her child, she was told that Hanuman's life would be a blessed one.  He was sure to live a life worthy of his calling.
Granted immortal life by the gods, Hanuman used his powers for mischief, for he had not learned to be disciplined as a young monkey.  The gods decided to remove Hanuman's knowledge of his powers until he could use them for the greater good.  Hanuman did grow to be a dignified and honored god, and therefore was able to use his powers to help others.  When he did so, he fought honorably and justly.
In this edition, some of Hanuman's feats have been documented with eyewitness testimony and an interview with Hanuman himself.

I chose Hanuman as my main focus because I believe he exemplifies many of the characteristics that are respected by people. His character makes it easy to write about him. While reading The Ramayana, I was never annoyed with him or upset with his actions. He knew his purpose in life, not just the short term purpose of serving Rama, but the long term purpose of giving his life for others. Hanuman lived to serve others loyally and to courageously fight evil.

His story also illustrates the importance of relationships and the encouragement one gets from those relationships. In his weak moments, Hanuman always had someone who was watching out for him or reminding him of his potential. This is how we should be in our relationships as well. We must encourage each other to strive toward the best that we can be. I know that if I did not have the friends and family that God has blessed me with, I would not be where I am today.

In the stories I have chosen to write, I focus on the characteristics that are most admirable about Hanuman.  In the first story I illustrate how Hanuman can distinguish between good and evil quickly, and how he immediately combats evil when he is face to face with it.  The second story details Hanuman’s courage and might as he gains the respect of a Rakshasa prince.  The third demonstrates Hanuman’s integrity.  He is loyal to those who have proven themselves to be worthy of his regard.  For my last story I chose one that presents all of Hanuman’s characteristics fully.  Hanuman's compassion is what drives him while his strength, mind and virtue are the vessels that he uses to fulfill his purposes.
