If God Will Send His Angels

Like many, i feel this song is basically a political/religious comment on the situation in Ireland, although i can also see it as a personal statement about his beliefs and the worlds belief/disbelief in god

Nobody else here baby, no one here to blame..no one to point the finger, its just you and me in the rain, Nobody made you do it..... This first stanza to me seems to be that irelands problems..or on the personal level..ours are of our own,and going around placing the blame on others isn't going to help the situation

Hey if god will send his angels.and if god will send a sign.and if god will send his angels, would everything be alright? here i think the angels Bono is talking about could be the angels of the worlds end, and if god did decide to send them...would you like that any more?

God's got his phone off the hook babe, would he even pick up if he could..its been a while since we saw that child(Jesus) hanging around this neighborhood, see His(Jesus) mother dealing in the doorway, see father christmas with a begging bowl, jesus sister's eyes are a blister. The HIGH STREET never looked so low This is the stanza where my interpretation differs from the ones i have read so far. I feel this is basically a comment on the corruption of the church...the "His mother" and jesus sister's are referring to christians. in Luke 3:35, Jesus said whoever does
God's will is my brother and sister and mother'"

Its the blind leading the blond Its the cops collecting on the cons (just more comments on corruption So where is the hope, and where is the faith and the LOVE? (with exception of the holy trinity, the 3 things valued most in Christianity) Ireland is a christian country and with all of the killings and prejudice he is having trouble seeing these things) the love lighting the christmas tree and blowing a fuse and the cartoon network turning into the news..just more comments on the mess of religion and politics in the world

and if god will send his angels...WHERE DO WE GO, in other words if the world Does end, what will happen to us?

After making comments about others, here is where i think the song gets personal...after all, didn't Bono say 'there enough hypocrisy in my own heart to write about" Jesus never let me down, you know jesus used to show me the score (way)       , although i guess you could also say Jesus helped him write music?) then they put jesus in show business, now its hard to get in the door..hmm maybe all the fame u2 has gotten has made keeping and living up to their beliefs harder? who knows

its the stuff, its the stuff of country songs...but i guess it was something to go on now i think he's talking about both the band ,ireland and possibly anyone who possesses christian beliefs..were getting some things wrong, but isn't what we have better than no direction or reassurance at all? And if god will send his angels, I sure could use them here right now Well if god will send his angels, where do we go?

Since i am interpreting the angels as the angels of the apocalypse, could this be a plea for the Second Coming?

Now that you've heard my thoughts on it, here is another view on the song:)

I have a different interpretation of the plea for God to send his angels...I think he is saying that people are always blaming God for the ills of the earth and asking why He doesn't intervene in our problems and fix them by sending His angels...and Bono is asking, even if God sent angels to the earth, would it fix things? I think he is saying that we create our own
problems and probably wouldn't follow the angels advice, or would just mess up again as soon as
question: Where do we go? as an agonizing plea to God for direction. People don't know what life is supposed to be about, what to do or where to go. Bono is pleading for direction. At least that is my take on it.    Bonnie Quigg
