Up With the Sun

Welcome to my small but rapidly growing U2 homepage. Rather than just being a U2 info page, I aim to make this site show just why I love this rock band so much and how their music and learning about them has impacted my life.

A Few reasons behind my madness:p

This might be the most often repeated phrase in the book, but looking back, U2's music has dramatically changed the way I view and react to our world. Their songs touched a chord in me that I didn't even know still existed...the part of me that wanted to care hope and believe. If I could think of a just a few words to sum up the effect their songs have on me, it would be "THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL" I love how their songs face and confront things like fear and doubt and the cold realities of our world and our flesh, but always have hope in them...a case in point being a Pop Favorite of mine.."Gone"

You get to feel so guilty.... Got so much for so little

Then you find that feeling Just won't go away

You're holding on to every little thing so tightly......... 'Til there's nothing left for you anyway

Goodbye... You can keep this suit of lights

I'll be up with the Sun

I'm not coming down I'm not coming down

You wanted to get somewhere so badly

You had to lose yourself along the way

You change your name, well that's okay, it's necessary And what you leave behind you don't miss anyway

Goodbye... You can keep this suit of lights

I'll be up with the sun

I'm not coming down..

'Cause I'm already gone..... Felt that way all along

Closer to You every day.... I didn't want it that much anyway

You're taking steps that make you feel dizzy

Then you learn to like the way it feels

You hurt yourself you hurt your lover Then you discover

What you thought was Freedom is just Greed

Goodbye... And it's emotional Good night...

I'll be up with the Sun You're still holding on?

I'm not coming down.......I'm not coming down

The lines " What you thought was Freedom is just Greed" and "I'll be up with the Sun, Are you still holding on?" are what really make this song connect for me. When I first connected and really heard this song, I was beginning my freshman year in college and trying to understand and misusing my newly found freedom....and this song spoke volumes to me about how I was behaving and how my desire to be free was demolishing my identity and the people around me....it helped me confront my realities but still be able to believe, sheer redemption in the form of a rock song to me!

SPEAKING OF REDEMPTION...

Another factor in my U2 fanhood involves the way these 4 guys and their music walk the secular/sacred music line. Although they most definitely have a large and quite powerful foothold in the secular music world, two of their albums are listed in the Contemporary Christian Music magazine..and their shows and albums are quite known for their religious imagery. I am a big rock music fan who holds strong Christian beliefs and I must say that I am fascinated with the way they approach spiritual issues in a music genre that is pretty much known to be athetistic. I never have understood why discussion of things like a belief in god have been so foreign to rock music...and I think one of my favorite Bono quotes sums this up better than I ever could" Sadomachoism in rock n' roll isn't rebellious...spirituality is"
