BANGLADESH, officially The People's Republic of Bangladesh, is an independent republic in the northeastern part of Indian Subcontinent in Southern Asia. The history of Bangladesh has been one of extremes, of turmoil and peace, prosperity and destitution. It has thrived under the glow of cultural splendor and suffered under the raveges of war. The earliest mention of Bangladesh is found in the hindu-epic the Mahabharata ( the story of Great Battle - 9 th century BC ). Evidence also suggests that there was a strong Mongoloid presence as well. Soon after, in the 5th and 6th centuries BC came the Aryans from the Central Asia and the Dravidians from Western India. Then came the Guptas, the Palas, and the Senas who were Buddhists and Hindus. From the 13th century AD, the Buddhists and the Hindus were swamped by the flood of Muslim invaders and the tide of Islam upto 18th century. Sometimes there were independent rulers like the hussain Shahi and Iliyas Shahi dynaties while at other times they ruled on behalf of the Imperial seat of Delhi. From 15th century, the Europeans, namely : Portuguese, Dutch, French, and Brithish treaders exerted an economic influence over the region. British political rule over the region began 1757 AD when the last muslim ruler of Bengal was defeated at Palassey. In 1947, the country was pertitioned into India and Pakistan. Present Bangladesh became the Eastern wing of the then Pakistan. But the movement for autonomy for East Pakistan stated within a couple of years because of language and cultural differences and economic disparity between the two wings. The seed of independence were swon through the language movement of 1952 AD to recognize Bangla as a state language. Ultimately the East Pakistan emerged as a sovereign and independent state of Bangladesh in 16th December, 1971 after nine-month long war of liberation that started in 26th March 1971 in which three million people died. The state language of Bangladesh is Bangla. The national anthem of Bangladesh comprises the first ten lines of 'Amar Sonar Bangla' of Rabindra Nath Tagore. The national flag of Bangladesh consists a circle colored red throughout its area, resting on a green rectangular background. The length to width ratioof the rectangle is 10:6 and the circle has a radius of one fifth of the length. It's center is placed on the intersecting point of the perpendicular drawn from the nine-twentieth part of the length of the flag and the horizontal line drawn through the middle of its width. Prescribed sizes of flag for buildings are 305 cm by 23 cm, 152 cm by 91 cm, and 76 cm by 46 cm, and for cars are 38 cm by 23 cm and 25 cm by 15 cm. The emblem of Bangladesh is the flower 'Shapla' (nympoea nouchali) resting on water having on each side an ear of paddy and surmounted by three connected leaves of jute with two stars on each side of the leaves. The capital of Bangladesh is Dhaka. Currency of the country is known as Taka (Tk) divided in 100 paisas with currency notes of the denominations Tk. 500, 100, 50, 20,10, 5, 2, and 1, and metallic coins of Tk. 1 and paisas 50, 25, 10, 5, and 1.
