Chapter 7
"The Nemean Lion"

Ann
had had enough. This time she was serious. She had done everything that
she could to show Kevin that he was messing up. She was the right girl
for him, and she always had been. Lindsey Crinkle meant nothing to him,
she knew it. She decided that now it was time to tell him. She wanted
her boyfriend back.
First thing on Thursday morning
she walked up to Kevin while he was taking his books out of his locker.
“Good morning, sweetie,” she cooed.
Kevin’s
stomach dropped. He could tell by the tone of her voice that she wanted
something, and he was not sure if he was ready to do what he wanted her
to. Choose.
The
fake conversation lasted no longer than three minutes. She asked if
they could spend time together that evening, and he quickly dodged the
issue by telling her that he had already made plans with the guys. They
were going to hang out and watch old football videos, since it was the
day before their last home game. As soon as he was finished giving her
his excuse he gave her a fast kiss on the cheek. As he walked away he
promised they would
have a chance to spend time together soon, and ran to class.
Ann
was not going to take no for an answer, though. She would just stop by
his house unexpectedly and force him to talk to her about everything.
Kevin
felt relieved but slightly guilty as he darted down the hall. He
didn’t have plans with the guys tonight, he and Lindsey were
going on a star date.
************************************************************************
Kevin
heard the doorbell ring as he was walking down the stairs to leave and
pick up Lindsey. He saw Ann at the door and was glad that his parents
weren’t home to make this stop last longer than it needed to. He
opened the door and immediately closed and locked it behind him.
“What are you doing here?” he
asked.
“I
just thought that I would stop by and say hi while you guys were
watching videos. You know, give you a quick hug and kiss on the
cheek.”
“Well that is sweet but actually
we are all going to Ryan’s to watch them. I am running late.”
He
gave her a big hug and kissed her on the forehead. “Ann, football
season is almost over. I promise things will be better soon,” he
reassured her and quickly went to the truck. “I will call you
later,” he yelled out the window as he drove away.
She
was suspicious. The boys always went to Kevin’s when they were
going to hang out and he sure was in a hurry to leave. She ran and
jumped in her car. She was going to follow him.
When
he reached his destination it wasn’t Ryan’s house; it was
Lindsey’s. Ann was furious. She parked further down the street
and quickly turned her car lights off. She was going to follow them and
see for herself what was going on.
They
ended up past the railroad tracks and he parked his truck in the middle
of a field. They were getting out. What could possibly be going on? She
threw her car into her park and went to confront them. This was just
ridiculous. Kevin had lied to her.
Kevin’s
stomach dropped when he saw Ann walking up to them. He didn’t
know what was about to happen, but he knew that it wasn't going to be
good.
Lucky
for him, the girls started the talking. There was no awkward silence.
They just went straight to arguing. Lindsey eventually got Ann to be
quiet for long enough to tell both her and Kevin the story about the
Nemean Lion constellation.
The
city of Nemea had been threatened by a huge lion, and several times
people in the area tried to kill the beast. King Eurystheus decided to
hire someone to try and defeat the lion, so that his people would be
safe. He chose Hercules, the strongest man in the region, to battle the
beast. When Hercules arrived at the cave where the lion lived, he
realized that all of his weapons were useless and would be no help in
the fight. Hercules then attacked the lion and destroyed him with his
bare hands. After the victory, the lion was placed in the stars by Zeus
and the Nemeans no longer had to live in fear.
“What does that story have to do
with anything?” Ann snapped. “It seems to be pretty pointless."
“If you listen for just a second.
I think you will appreciate the point that I am trying to make.”
“Well, hurry up and make it.”
“Kevin,
your weapons of avoidance are useless. You are now left just like
Hercules was and are going to have to face your problem. You
can’t keep dancing around the subject any longer. You have to
tell us what is going on. You have to be honest.”
“What she is trying to say is that
you have to choose. Now!”
Kevin was speechless. His problem
had caught up to him and he was completely vulnerable and defenseless.
