Chapter 6
"Pisces"

Kevin
was so confused. It had been four days since Lindsey had left him “the
note.” He never thought that an innocent crush would come to mean so
much to him and he never dreamed that it would cause such inner
turmoil. Where did she come from? Out of nowhere his world had been
turned upside down.
Now,
besides Ann being angry with him, his father had noticed a change in
his behavior. He had pulled him aside after the family came home from
church on Sunday and said that he wanted to have a little talk
with his eldest son. This was never a good sign. Mr. White ran a tight
ship and when one of his children was making waves he put a stop to it,
immediately. But, how could he know? Kevin hadn’t told anyone what had
been bothering him!
“What
seems to be bothering you, son?”
“Nothing,
Dad. I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Are
you sure?”
“Yes.
I am sure.”
“Well,
it just seems like you haven’t been your normal self lately. You come
home after practice and eat dinner and then go to your room and study.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate your dedication to your school work
and to football, but you used to come home from practice and talk our
ears off. Then scamper off to Ann’s and you two would study and hang
out.
Or maybe she would even come over for dinner or you two would spend
Saturdays together. Where was she yesterday?”
“Dad,
I don’t know. I don’t have to spend every waking second with her. We
are fine. We haven’t broken up or anything. Even if we did, why would
that matter?”
“Son,
our family has a reputation in this town and I just don’t want you to
be causing any trouble, especially with the Wyatts. They have been our
family friends for a long time and with an election year coming up…”
“Dad,
stop. We haven’t broken up. We are still fine. I have not cost you any
votes.”
With
that Kevin stood up and stormed off. He could not believe his dad's
nerve. Who
does he think he is, an election year, are we kidding? As he walked up
to his room, he could hear his father’s voice in his head, “Son, people
look up to you. Don’t let them down,” and on and on and on exactly like
that until he finally fell asleep on his bed.

On
Monday morning Lindsey went straight to her locker when she arrived at
school and was surprised when she found a note folded and left inside.
It was from Kevin, and she was shocked. She had not talked to Kevin
since she had left him her note and really it had been since a couple
days before that. She wanted so badly for everything to be ok. She
wanted him to take her in his arms and give her a huge hug or even just
squeeze her hand and tell her that it was all going to be alright. She
wanted the reassurance. Even if they could not be together she
wanted him to tell her that they could always be friends.
She
was hesitant to unfold it, scared to death of what it might say.
It
started like this:
Lindsey,
You
are one of my very best friends, and I feel honored to have you as a
part of my life. I am not sure exactly what is going on in my life
though. I am confused. I am so very confused. I wish that I could be as
eloquent as you were in describing what exactly I am feeling and what
it is that I am experiencing right now.
The
note went on to tell Lindsey a beautiful story about the constellation,
Pisces. Typhoeus was a giant that roamed the earth and one fatal day
he appeared on Mt Olympus and startled all the gods and goddesses who
lived there. In response to his arrival the gods and goddesses all
transformed themselves into animals to escape his wrath. For example,
Jupiter changed into a ram; Apollo transformed into a crow; and Diana
took on the shape of a cat. Venus and her son Cupid were at the
Euphrates River bathing when Typhoeus arrived and they changed
themselves into fish and hid in the river to escape danger. Later
Minerva immortalized the forms of the fish and placed them in the
stars.
Kevin
asked Lindsey if she would be his second fish and swim beside him in
spirit as he escaped the things that plagued him. He wanted to just
pretend it was all not happening but he had to face the facts and deal
with it. In his heart, though, he would be beside her.
The
note ended by saying that Kevin wanted another star date as well, but
for right now still needed just a little time to decide how he
was going to handle everything else in his life. He was in a tough
spot, but he wanted her to trust him. He wanted her to know that he
missed her too and that he was thinking about her.
It
was beautiful. It was everything that she wanted to hear. She walked to
her first class and felt as if she were floating on air. Maybe
everything really would be ok.
