My Trip to Cancun

In the summer of 2005 I went to Cancun, Quintana Roo with a friend of mine. I was looking forward to this trip because I had heard that the scenery is very beautiful, and it indeed is, as you will see some of the pictures I took on the trip. The background is actually a picture I took from the plane as we were approaching the airport. This was actually my first time on an airplane and my first time to see the ocean! Another reason I wanted to see Cancun was so I could go visit the Mayan ruins my Spanish teacher had told me so much about.

Cancun has fun things to do for just about anyone. You could:

On my trip I had the chance to go to three very memorable places in Quintana Roo. They were Tulum, Chichen Itza (which are both Mayan ruins), and Xel Ha (which is an aquatic park).

Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza actually means "at the mouth of the well of the Itza". This once was a great Mayan city. The pyramid is surrounded by the Temple of Warriors and the Great Ballcourt as well as by a small ruin that used to be a sacrifice well.

The Temple of Warriors consists of an upper temple which is surrounded by tall, stone pillars that represent an elite warriors sacrifice to their gods. At the top of this temple lies a stone structure in a reclining position named Chac-Mool. He was known as the messenger to the gods. Offerings were placed on its stomach; our guide told us the offerings were usually the hearts of men!

The Great Ballcourt was made of two high, stone walls on both sides. On each wall there was a stone ring, that was seven meters from the ground, which was like the hoop in basketball. The game was played by two opposing teams. The point of the game was to get the ball to go through your ring. The captain of the first scoring team was decapitated as a sacrifice to the gods. It was a great honor to be sacrificed; it was a guarantee entrance into heaven. What made this game more challenging than regular basketball is that the ball was very heavy and the players couldn't use their hands. Sometimes these games would last days until someone scored.

The sacrifice well I saw up close wasn't visible anymore; it was covered with a mound of dirt and rocks with skulls carved on them; these rocks are symoblic of death and sacrifice. Our guide told us that many bones of young women were found in the wells. The idea behind this was that young women would dress up in their best clothes and jewelry. They would be provided enough liquor until they would jump into the well on their own. The weight from their clothes and jewelry was supposed to help them sink to the bottom. At bottom they were supposed to ask for things from the gods, for example, they would frequently ask for rain from the rain god.
