TIYE
THE NUBIAN QUEEN OF EGYPT
(Quiet
down !!! it is another perfect moonlit evening for a story, and the
people can't stop thinking about who the third girl's story is
going to be about )
I might be
considered a minority because of the color of my skin but when I speak
people of all races listen. I have wisdom beyond my years, and
even though I come from a simple family, my hard work, intelligence,
and beauty will always bring me and my entire family special
recognition. These are some of the qualities of my name. The same
qualities that were originally possessed by Tiye
the Great Nubian Queen of Egypt whose name I bear today.
CALL:
This
is the story about the Tiye the Nubian Queen of Egypt. A story, a story
RESPONSE: Let it go, let it come
A long, long
time ago in ancient Egypt there lived a powerful Pharaoh named Amen-Hetep
III. Everyone in Egypt respected his leadership. This Pharaoh was
young, good-looking, and single. He was the most eligible
bachelor in all of ancient Egypt, and many young women of
noble blood came from every part of Egypt to seek his approval
for marriage but none of them favored him. The priests found his
behavior really strange, and continuously reminded him that it was his
obligation to get married very soon to a woman of noble Egyptian
blood. Amen-Hetep III listened to all their advice but he was
not attracted to any of those Egyptian women. He was in love with
someone special; he was in love with a young dark skinned beautiful
Nubian girl called Tiye.
Amen-Hetep told
the priests about his love for Tiye, and they scolded for having
emotional feelings for her. They told him there was no way he could
marry her because because she was a "commoner". She was not of noble
birth, she came from a poor background, and besides she was Nubian, and
the Nubians were enemies of the Egyptians. Amen-Hetep defied all their
advice, and still married Tiye. This was how Tiye became the first
Nubian Queen of Egypt. Amen-Hetep and Tiye ruled Egypt hand in hand. He
gave her great power to attend to various political, and
diplomatic issues that dealt with the kingdom. Their union
changed the way many people viewed the roles of women in Egypt, and it
also brought about peace between the Egyptian Kingdom and the Nubian
Kingdom. Their strong love for each other also had a direct
positive impact on the way people in ancient Egypt viewed the
relationship between a man and his wife, or a ruler and his
queen. Amen-Hetep's love for Tiye led him to build temples, and
lakes in honor of her beauty and humility.
Amen-Hetep and
Tiye had many children together including Egypt's famous and
controversial pharaoh Akhenaten
who was the husband of Nefititi,
and the father of King
Tutankhamen (king Tut). Tiye was Queen in Egypt for over 50 years,
and today she is still remembered by many Egyptians as " The one who
fills the palace with beauty and love", "Mother of the King", "The
kings great wife whom he loves", " The lady of both lands",
"Noblewoman", and "Great of praises".
This is why I will
never let my skin color or social status dictate my future. I have been
blessed with so many admirable qualities, and I will continue to strive
live up to this name that I bear so that I too can leave behind a
memorable legacy like Tiye.
(Another
wonderful story, and another positive response from the audience. Until
next weekend may the memories of Tiye the Nubian Queen of Egypt fill
your hearts, and homes with beauty and love)

AUTHOR'S
NOTE: I found a lot of fairly accurate information about Tiye
so it was really difficult trying to re-tell her story in my own words.
All the evidences I recorded in my story are original facts of actual
things that happened before and during her reign. I also included
additional information that I found online about her husband, her son,
her daughter in-law, and her grandson. All this information I found
online about Queen Tiye's family was really interesting. I hope you
will have some few minutes to click on the links I provided and read
about them as you read through my story. I used the character of the
storyteller to personalize my story, and I also used the African call
and response storytelling technique in this story. As you may have
already noticed I will be using this call and response technique for
all the stories in my storybook.
