One afternoon a beautiful young girl entered the fancy salon.  Everyone turned their heads in awe.  She had long, flowing, golden hair and was dressed like a princess from one-hundred years ago.

Kathy, the receptionist, greeted her and said, "Good afternoon.  How may I help you?"

The girl said, "Yes.  I do not have an appointment, but I am in desperate need of a make over!"

"You don't look like it to me, but let me see what we have available," Kathy replied.

Some of the women that were already in the salon shook their heads agreeably.

Kathy checked the schedule book, asked to be excused, and approached one of the stylists.  The stylist smiles and nods, and they the two women return to the front.

The stylist said, "Hello my name is Heather."

The girl said, "Nice to meet you.  My name is Aurora."

The two women go to Heather's station.  Heather asked Aurora what she was wanting to have done.

Aurora said, "I want a complete make over.  Hair, face, nails the whole thing.  It has been a while and I need some help!"

"You do not need help, but I will do whatever I need to in order to make you happy," Heather responded.

"Well, to be honest,  I have been asleep for the last one-hundred years.  So, I am in desperate need to modernize my look!" Aurora said.

Everyone in the salon turned to look at her.  They were curious about the one-hundred year nap.

One of the other clients said, "One-hundred years?  You need to tell us about this."

Heather said, "Yes, you need to tell us all about it.  First, let's get started on your facial.  Then you can tell us about this long nap you took while I do your hair."

Aurora got her facial done, and they returned to Heather's station.  Heather asked Aurora what she wanted to do to her hair.

"Please cut some of these old ends off, and let's highlight it to brighten it up a bit," Aurora responded.

"Alright," Sheridan said, "Now, tell me about that ridiculously long nap you took."

Everyone turned their attention to Aurora eager to hear the story that led to a one-hundred year nap.

"Well, it all started when I was born.  On my birthday my parents held a huge feast at our castle and invited in town.  Some of the attendants were fairies and they each blessed me with a gift," Aurora said.

"What gifts?" Kathy asked.

"I received the gifts of beauty, wit, grace, dance, and song."

"That must be nice," another client said.

"It was until an evil fairy entered the room.  She was upset at not being invited to the feast.  She punished my parents by cursing me to have my finger pricked by a spindle and die," Aurora said.

"Oh, how awful!" Heather said.

Aurora continued, "Yes, but luckily for me another fairy had waited to give me her gift.  She approached my parents and I, waved her wand, and said. "You will still prick your finger on a spindle.  That I can't change.  However, you will not die.  You will go into a deep sleep for one-hundred years.  Then, when the time comes a prince will kiss you and you will awake.""

"Oh, well that's a little better," Kathy replied.

"My parents had every spindle they could find thrown into a huge fire.  But one day ,about sixteen years later, I was wondering around our castle and I came across a strange room.  I went in, and an old woman was spinning on her spindle.  I approached her, and not thinking I touched the spindle.  I instantly fell into a deep sleep," Aurora said.

"Oh, wow," Heather responded, "So, what happened with your prince?  Did he come and kiss you?"

Aurora blushed, smiled, and said,"Eventually.  My parents had a room with a beautiful bed prepared for me, and that's where they laid me down.  They were worried about when I would awake because everyone I had known would be gone.  So, one of the fairies wand and everyone in the castle fell asleep."

"That was thoughtful," Kathy said.

"The castle was covered by trees so no one would disturb their slumber.  One-hundred years later there was a new, young prince in town.  One day while he was hunting he came across a thick forest.  He wanted to know what it was hiding.  He'd heard rumors but took it upon himself to find out.  He entered the forest and eventually came across a castle.  He entered it and found me in my bed.  He told me it was love at first sight.  He bent down to kiss me, and I awoke," Aurora said

"Ahh..." filled the salon.

Everyone was smiling.

"Then everyone else started to wake up.  My prince and I are to wed soon, and so that is why I wanted a make over.  I figured my style was a little out of date after being asleep for one-hundred years," Aurora finished.

"Wow, that is a crazy story.  We will have you all fixed up, and you can go home to your prince," Heather said.

Everyone in the salon was glad to hear of Aurora's nap and her finding of true love.

Author's Note:  I retold the story of "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood" from Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book.  I changed the story by having it set in a modern-day salon.  It was the same salon that was used in An Up-So for Cinderella.  I thought that it would be nice to have the setting be present day so that it would be easier for readers to relate to.  I thought it would be interesting to have Sleeping Beauty tell her story, because she could enter after a one-hundred year nap and get a make over.  While she was getting her make over she could tell her story about why she took a one-hundred year nap.  I thought that would be a nice new twist to the story.  I had Sleeping Beauty be the storyteller instead of having the story told by a narrator.  I left out some of the ending to shorten the story.  I varied from the original story in that I had her parents fall asleep also.  I also did not have Sleeping Beauty marry the prince, have two children with the prince, or be tormented by her evil mother-in-law.  I changed the story a little bit, but I hope that this version of Sleeping Beauty is just as enjoyable as others.
