Hello, kids. Welcome back. I hope everyone had a good Easter. I was going to tell you the story of Sinbad and the giant whale today. I thought that since it was Easter yesterday I could tell you the story about Sinbad and the painted eggs.

OK, class, quiet down.

This story takes place several years after Sinbad found himself in trouble with the giant snakes. It was Sinbad's brother's birthday and he wanted to get him something very special. Sinbad found a ship that was to sail to many islands during the spring months. He paid four bits of gold and bought himself a ride on the ship. The morning that the ship left the port was a beautiful, calm morning. Early in the evening a storm quickly moved in. The waves were as tall as the sails and the wind was blowing the boat side to side. All of the sailors went below the deck to take cover. The storm rocked the boat all night long.

When the storm finally had passed and the sun appeared, Sinbad and the others came up and noticed the ship was on a beach. The ship was torn in half. Sinbad and the crew thought about what to do. After a while, Sinbad decided not to waste any more time and chose to go inland by himself. Sinbad walked for two days without seeing anyone. There was plenty of fruit on this island, so he did not go hungry.

While walking on the second day, Sinbad noticed something purple in the grass. He ran over and picked it up. It was a purple egg. Sinbad stashed it in his pocket and walked on. He kept walking and noticed a red egg in the bush to his right. He grabbed it. He looked to his left and noticed a green egg sitting on a tree branch. There were eggs behind every rock and in every bush in the area. Sinbad did not have a way to carry the eggs. Sinbad sat down and piled the eggs in front of him. While looking for more eggs, Sinbad found some straw. He was a very crafty man. He wove the straw into a basket and lined it with grass so that the eggs wouldn't break. Sinbad was very tired and went to sleep. The next morning he woke up and decided to take his eggs further inland.

Sinbad walked for a couple of hours and came to a path. He followed the path to a little village where there were kids lined up with baskets like his. He was very confused. Just as he was about to say hello, someone yelled, "Go!" The kids all ran down the path screaming. This scared Sinbad so bad that he jumped into the trees and hid. About an hour later, the kids came walking back down the path. Every kid had an egg or two in their basket. Sinbad jumped into line behind the last kid. The kids all lined up in front of a man who counted their eggs. When it came to Sinbad's turn, the man counted his eggs. He had more eggs than all of the kids. Sinbad did not know what to do, so he was quiet. The man reached into a box and pulled out a gold egg. Sinbad had won this golden egg for bringing back the most eggs. Sinbad was confused but did not ask questions; he ran as fast as he could. Just beyond the trees was a small town with a ship that was about to leave. Sinbad ran to the ship and jumped aboard and waved back to the island.

easter

Well, kids, that is all for this week. We are out of time.  Next week, I will tell you about Sinbad and the giant whale. Have a good day!

Author's note: I was going to tell the story "Sinbad:Giant Whale" this week. I changed it because of the Easter holiday. I am trying to make this story book as real as possible. I thought that it would be fun to change the planned story with one about colored eggs. My daughter also said she wanted me to tell a story about Easter. I did use the hurricane and storm from Sinbad's Fourth Voyage. I thought this was a good way to crash the ship. Sinbad always seems to be sort of impatient and ready to get moving. I tried to duplicate this with him leaving the crew to go on his own while they were thinking. The rest of the story I completely made up. I thought the basket weaving and grass to keep the eggs from breaking was a nice touch of Easter. I also remembered hunting eggs when I was a kid. I thought that since Sinbad did not know what was happening, that the kids, running around, acting crazy would scare the hell out of him. I ended the story with Sinbad winning the golden egg. He always seems kind of sly and smart to me. I thought that Sinbad taking the egg and running with no questions showed this.
