Lesson Plan to Accompany Book

Age Group: K-2

Materials Needed:

Book, Ten Rosy Roses

Blocks

Set Up Required:

First read book, after reading discuss what happened in the book. For example, one could say; At the beginning of the story there was 10 rosy roses and a child took one and then there was nine. The teacher needs to continue with the story subtracting one each time until there are two left and then subtract two. The story ends with no rosy roses left to pick, so the teacher could introduce the concept of 0.

-Tip:

Use blocks to represent flowers, they can act as a visual aide, children will be able to visually see a block being taken away, this will also help explain the concept of 0. Read the story again and allow each child to have ten blocks and as the story is read have the children to take blocks away. The blocks would also be useful to practice adding and subtracting.

Rationale:

The book will introduce the concept of subtraction in a fun, interesting way.
