The story
of La Llorona is
familiar to me from my childhood. Throughout my life, she has
followed me. The framework of the story exhibits general
differences, but the basic nature remains the same. As I read her
stories and hear from others about their experiences with her, I
realize that La Llorona has evolved and grown as I have throughout the
years.
La
Llorona has been a part
of my life since I was 10 years old. In her various aspects, she has
become a symbol of different epochs of my life. Twenty six years
have passed since our first encounter and still she haunts me.
She
has evolved along with me and together we have faced the various
predicaments women face throughout their life. As I sit here, I
can count seven different ways in which La Llorona has inspired me or
imparted lessons:
Obedience
Retribution
Remorse
Loneliness
Choices
Tolerance
Wisdom
In re-telling the
story of La Llorona through different points of view, I will be able to
show how stories evolve along with their target audiences in order to
maintain their moralizing effect. The versions will show
the progression and changes in the character due to cultural
influences, geographical locations and time as well as the target
audience, thus allowing La Llorona to co-exist alongside pop culture.
