Hands

We are alone,
Separated by our winter warmth.
Still, we are cold.
Let's remove the gloves.

We seek each other in nakedness.
We come together,
Fingers interlacing, clasping,
Releasing, rubbing together.

Finally, cupped together
We form a receptacle
To receive the warm moist
Breath of love.

We cling together
trying to make it last.

Cris Richardson, 1994

Heat

110 degrees
the car is like the fire box of an old Ashley wood stove
He speaks--
     I was thinking...
She thinks.
Later,
a chance to speak.
She says,
Today, I--
He interrupts--
We should...
Her words are caught
in the steel-jawed trap of marital bliss.
Platinum beams of heat pierce the armor of the car
pierce her heart--
The white-hot heat of anger becomes her core.
It could be a nuclear meltdown.
He speaks again--
Did you say something?
She--
Nothing.
Cris Richardson, 1995
