Bloody Mary
"Oh my gosh! What was that?"
Heather screamed.
"The elevator was just settling or
something like
that. Right? I mean what else could it be? It has to
be just the cables settling, right? RIGHT?!?!" Stephanie
was looking for reassurance from one of the other girls.
"I'm sure that's all it was," Amber
said. "Let's hear your story Stephanie."
Stephanie let out a sigh before she
started her story. "Ok. My brother's girlfriend's
hairdresser was going to NYU before she decided to follow her
dream of doing hair. She lived in the campus apartments
and had three roommates. One night they decided to
summon 'Bloody Mary'. It was a dark, stormy night. The
wind was blowing hard and the rain was being pelted against the windows
of their third floor apartment. They lit two candles and headed
into the bathroom and shut the door. They could have easily left
it open because there was no light coming in from the windows."
All four girls were huddled together in
the elevator as they started to feel a draft coming in from the
two open spaces. Amanda's body shivered and then she asked the
girls, "Are you guys getting cold?"
The girls all nodded yes and then
Stephanie continued to speak. "Once all the girls were in
the bathroom and the door was shut, they briefly argued about who would
be the one to chant Mary's name. They finally agreed that all
four of them should say it together. They held hands and stood in
front of the mirror. Each could barely see their own reflection
by the glow of the candlelight. They started in a soft
whisper. 'Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary. Bloody
Mary.' One of the girls giggled softly, but the other three were
too scared to be amused. Their voices grew louder as they
continued to conjure the spirit from the mirror. 'Bloody
Mary. Bloody Mary.'"
"Do you really have to say it that many
times, Steph?" Amanda asked. "It's kind of starting to
freak me out."
"Amanda, there aren't any mirrors in
here. You don't have anything to be scared of," Amber explained.
Heather could not stop staring at her
reflection in the elevator door. You could tell it had been
recently cleaned and her reflection was distorted by the streaks from
the cleaner.
Stephanie's voice snapped Heather out of
her reverie. "Once the girls had said Bloody Mary thirteen
times, they stared into the mirror. All at once, they
screamed. It seemed that their images in the mirror were coming
together to form one face in the mirror. This face looked
wretched. It was something out of an old Tales of the Crypt
episode. When the girls tried to open the door, they realized it
was jammed. It wouldn't open. They tried to unlock it, lock
it, and unlock it again. It was stuck. Then a voice
spoke. 'Who beckons me?' it asked. The girls
screamed again. They tried to turn on the lights but they
did not turn on."
At that moment, the noise from
above the elevator could be heard again. This time it was louder
and they realized it couldn't be the cables. Their eyes grew wide
as the sound continued to get louder. Just as Stephanie started
to speak again, something fell from somewhere above them.
The girls couldn't see what it was, but they were scared. It made
a loud thump and then they heard a soft scratching. The
girls
jumped up, huddled in the corner, and tried to search the floor of
the elevator to see what it was. They quickly realized it was a
mouse. This did not give the girls any comfort. They
yelled at each other to get it out. Finally, Stephanie picked the
mouse up and released it through the open space.
Stephanie was finally able to finish her
story. "A strong draft blew through the bathroom and both candles
went out. The girls started yelling for help
and continued to rattle the door handle. One girl was crying
and the other three were on the verge of tears. They could not
see each other, but they could hear the ragged breathing of
their friends. Finally, the door opened slightly and the
girls pushed the door open and ran into the bedroom. They flipped
on all the lights and the look of shock on each of their faces
told a story of its own. The girls had small scratches all
over their faces. Tiny droplets of blood ran from each
cut. The girls went to a different bathroom to clean themselves
up, but they made sure to leave the light on and not close the
door. None of them spoke of the incident again, but two weeks
later they requested a change in apartments."
"Wow, that's crazy. I will NEVER
do the 'Bloody Mary' thing again. I've tried it before and
nothing happened, but after hearing that story, I definitely don't want
to meet this lady. She's hardcore," Heather stated.
"The thing that creeps me out the most
about that story is the fact that they were stuck. They couldn't
get out. I'm a little claustrophobic like that," Stephanie
explained. The girls looked at each other and finally Stephanie
understood what she had just said. She was living her biggest
fear and there was nothing she could do about it.
It was finally Heather's turn to tell
her story. She was proud that she got the chance to go
last. It would be the perfect story to end a perfect evening and
she couldn't wait to scare everyone...to death.
Author's Note:
There are many different versions of
this story. Each time the story is told the details change.
Sometimes there is only one girl that goes into the bathroom and her
friends wait outside. The number of times to chant Bloody Mary
changes each time the story is re-told and "Bloody Mary" goes by
different names.
Some people say that you need to light two candles, some say one, and
some say there shouldn't be any candles at all. The actions of
Mary change as well. This woman has been known to scratch
people, drive them to insanity, kill them, or just speak back.
Who Mary is changes frequently. She might be a woman who was
killed
locally or an old witch from one hundred years ago. The
details change, but the theme remains the same. A woman is
summoned from a mirror and nothing good comes from it.
I changed the details of my story to
include four girls since the characters in my story are four
girls. I had them chant thirteen times since the setting is
Friday the 13th. I don't think I changed too many of the
details. I just picked different elements of each version to make
it my own.
