Moon Story One: The Tale of the Divided River

The audience below the Sun and Moon were both excited and sad. They were excited because they couldn't wait to hear the stories that the Moon had to tell but it was sad because the eclipse was half over. The reunion would be over soon and it would be quite a few years before it happened again. The Moon felt a lot of pressure to reciprocate such great storytelling on the part of the Sun. The Moon told one its favorite stories by its good friend River. The River had a different kind of story than the ones that the Sun told. The River had a tale of good Nature against bad Nature.

                                      The Divided River

I am used to living a fast, rapid-paced life. Things are always moving for me and I have never fathomed what it would be like to stay in one place. On one occasion I had the unfortunate privilege of separating two lands. One land was ruled by a dark prince and he wanted to marry the princess from the good land named Land-Under-Waves. The princess from Land-Under-Waves was not in favor of marrying such a cruel force. You see, the reason why the dark prince was so evil was because he did not take care of his own land. Elements of Nature relied on him to support and protect their existence. The dark prince took their concerns and he called upon floods, fire and heavy winds to destroy them due to their insolence. It was a happy day when the dark prince's arrogance got the best of him and he was destroyed by a human. The dark land rejoiced but not for long, when the dark prince's sister took over his evil rule. She knew the princess from Land-Under-Waves was responsible for his death and wanted revenge. I knew that no matter how fast I could flow I would not be able to avoid being in the middle of their battle.

I have it on good authority that the Princess from Land-Under-Waves did send out a human army to combat the dark prince. Not long afterward I received a messenger from the bad land wanting to enlist the help of the good princess to free the elements of Nature from their torture. I sent one of my streams to deliver the message. The princess's affirmative response traveled the same way back to me and to the ears of the messenger. The forces of Nature of the bad land, who really aren't that bad at all, could not help but celebrate and were loud enough that the dark princess overheard. Instantly the dark princess sent a poisonous thunder cloud to rain down on the good princess. She fell ill almost at once. She knew she was going to die and sent for help from her human friends again. They sent their best physician, Jeermit, to save her. The princess explained the remedy she needed only came from the dark princess's land. Jeermit was not afraid and set off immediately to follow the good princess's orders.

Dark Cloud of Poison   Jeermit had to get a cup of healing from a hermit living on the dark princess's land and fill it with water from the Well of Healing. After he accomplished that, he had to find some red moss and have the princess swallow it with the well water to cure her. The problem was that the Well of Healing happened to be hiding itself in the dark land. Not even the dark princess knew it was there. Jeermit met the hermit and got the cup of healing with minimal problems. He made his way to my banks and puzzled about how to cross me. I sprouted up and told him that as long as his heart was true to the love of Nature he had only to walk across me. He forded me with no problems because I could feel his heart in the truth of his words.  He thanked me diligently and said he would see me again after he found the Well of Healing.

Jeermit did not have to travel far in the bad land to find the Well. In fact, the Well had heard the princess was sick and there was a physician sent to look for him to gather his healing nectar. Giving the healing water up was easier than the Well thought because once the water was freely given, the Well gave up its ownership to the drinker. Jeermit forded me again, in haste this time, to make it to the princess. She was grateful to see him and drank from the cup while also swallowing the red moss that he had collected on his way back. The princess was healed and now in control of the Well of Healing. To get back at the dark princess, she called upon the well to martyr itself and pour itself over the bad land to heal it. I tearfully said my good-bye's to the Well and helped it by carrying its healing water to all the streams and creeks of the bad land.

The dark princess could see her land turning green and lush from the black and dead that it had been.  She ran out to try and conjure up some power but she was doused with water from a nearby stream and carried to my deep depths. I drowned her in the healing water because it had no power over her since she was so evil. The bad land, now renamed the Land of Healing after the Well, spread its cheer and life to all of its borders. The princess of Land-Under-Waves sent Jeermit back to his homeland with many kisses and gifts for the pivotal role he played.

Author's Note:

This was another long story that I completely changed.  It would be easier to tell you the things that I kept from the story. There was a dark prince, a princess of Land-Under-Waves, and Jeermit. I made up the dark princess to control the evil after the dark prince died. The river I had to personify so I created that character as well.  The princess really was dying but not from a poisoned storm cloud. I had to make something up since it was not explained in the original what she was sick from. Jeermit did save her but she wanted him to stay and he could not; he wanted to return to his own land. The princess was a real person but I made her a somewhat mystical force that took the shape of a human that represented good nature. I thought it was appropriate in keeping with the theme of my storybook.
