Busy Day

Frog in Shallow Water

is in the Air
It has been a very long shift. Frank
and James have been extremely busy today. Since they came on shift at
0700, they have run ten calls. They have barely had time to go to the
bathroom, much less get anything to eat. The only food the pair has
been able to eat since breakfast, was some cold fast food they scarfed
down in between calls.
It is 1945 and the pair is just pulling into the bay at the station.
Frank looks at James and says, "I'm starving! It sure will be nice to
sit and relax for a few minutes."
James and Frank enter the station. Like a true veteran of EMS, James
heads straight for the bathroom. Frank goes to the kitchen looking for
food. Frank gets his food into the microwave, but just as he is
anticipating the ding of the microwave, he hears another sound:
*** BEEP.... BEEP.... BEEP *** "Medic
12 respond Highway seventy-two and Frogville Road for the
auto-pedestrian. Medic 12 respond Highway seventy-two and Frogville
Road for the auto-pedestrian. Time out 1951."
Heading towards the truck, Frank lets out a long sigh as the microwave
bell dings. James cannot help but laugh.
In under one minute the garage door is going up and the ambulance in
pulling out. "Medic 12 en route," James tells the dispatcher via radio.
"Copy Medic 12 en route. Medic 12 we are getting multiple calls of an
auto-pedestrian at this location. Reported one patient with severe
injuries," advises the dispatcher.
Looking at Frank, James says, "You sure are a magnet!"
The ambulance races through traffic with lights flashing, and sirens
blaring. In just over four minutes they arrive on scene.
"Medic 12 on scene," Frank says on the radio.
James and Frank climb out of the ambulance. They see a group of several
bystanders gathered in a ditch next to the roadway. This is another
call in the portion of Medic 12's district where most of the patients
are talking animals. James notices that the group of bystanders is a
mix of humans and animals, but he is unable to see through the crowd to
the patient.
James looks at Frank and says, "Grab some equipment and let's go."
They grab a few pieces of equipment and move towards the crowd.
As they approach the crowd, Frank says, "Excuse me! Make room please."
The crowd makes a hole for James and Frank. As the crowd parts, the two
medics see a large frog lying flat on the ground. Kneeling next to the
injured frog is another frog.
Frank kneels down next to the injured frog and begins his assessment.
Franks says, "Sir, can you hear me?"
There is no response. Frank then opens the patient's airway, and checks
for breathing and a pulse. The patient is barely breathing and has a
very weak pulse. About this time, James kneels down next to Frank
and asks, "What do you need?"
Frank replies, "We need to assist ventilations! He is really hurt!"
James hands Frank a bag-valve-mask to assist the patient's
respirations.
James then asks Frank, "Sooo.... what happened?"
Frank stutters when he says, "I don't know."
James then turns to the uninjured frog and asks, "What happened?"
This frog is very upset but replies, "I tried to get him to move. I
asked him to move!"
Frank continues his assessment and finds that the patient has a
multiple injuries. Frank finds several large lacerations and bruising
across the abdomen, along with suspected fractures to both legs and the
right arm.
Trying to clarify, James asks, "What were you trying to get him to move
out of the way of?"
As James is questioning the bystander about the events leading up to
the injury, the medics work quickly to stabilize the injured patient.
Frank inserts a breathing tube and continues assisting the patient's
respirations. James works to prepare a backboard to move the patient.
The uninjured frog says, "He lives here. I tried to get him to move in
with me but he wouldn't. It is too dangerous living this close to the
road!"
James asks, "Okay, but what happened that got him hurt tonight?"
The uninjured frog answers, "I tried to get him to move! The wagon just
ran right over him! The wagon ran over him! I told him that this pond
was too shallow and too close to the road! Oh my! Why wouldn't he
listen to me?"
Trying to calm the uninjured frog, James says, "Sir, you tried to warn
him. Sometimes personal comfort can hinder personal safety. We are
doing everything we can and will be taking him to Mother Healing."
James and Frank gently roll the injured frog onto a backboard and
secure him. The patient is then moved to the ambulance stretcher and
secured. Frank attaches the patient to a transport ventilator, while
James attaches the cardiac monitor. Once the patient is attached to the
ventilator, Frank moves to starting an IV to administer fluids to the
severely injured patient.
It has been just under ten minutes since James and Frank began treating
the injured frog. Frank and James load the stretcher into the
ambulance. Frank climbs in the back, while James goes around front to
drive.
"Medic 12 transporting emergency to Mother Healing," advises James on
the radio.
During the twelve minute ride to the hospital, Frank works to start a
second IV and splint the injured frog's broken bones. Despite their
best
efforts the injured frog's health continues to deteriorate.
Medic 12 pulls into the driveway at Mother Healing Trauma Center and
parks. James and Frank quickly move the patient into the
emergency department. After a quick report of the events surrounding
the patient's injuries, along with a review of the treatment provided,
James and Frank hand the patient over to the trauma team.
The trauma team works quickly attempting to stabilize the patient for
surgery, but the patient continues his downhill slide and is pronounced
dead by the physician a short time later.
James and Frank clean their equipment and prepare to return to service.
"You think we can catch a break now?" asks Frank.
James smiles, "Probably not! But we can sure try."
"Medic 12 in service" Frank says on the radio, then turns to James,
"Maybe I can get that dinner now."
