- Read p. 261-2, 267-9, and 273-5 in SMG.

- Read in the PEC “The Declaration of Independence” (p. 157-63) and “Women’s Right to Suffrage” (p. 165-7).

- Complete handout from readings.

- Make marginal notes on supporting details in readings.

 

Day Three

The Persuasive Technique of Picking your Audience Using Tone and Language, Picking a Topic, and Learning not Pick on People 

- Read in PEC “The USA Patriot Act…” (p. 169-75) and “The New Media…” (p. 215-25).

- Complete the ‘Freedom of Speech 4-6 sentence paragraph handout. 

 

Day Four

The Persuasive Technique of Picking Possible Solutions, Picking a Topic, and Picking a Peck of Pickle Peppers

- Review “The ‘New’ Media and Politics:  What Does the Future Hold?” (p. 215-225 in PEC). 

- Complete your ‘Topic Development’ handout and choose a topic that you are intending to do your essay on. 

 

Day Five

Counter-Arguments in Your Writing

 

- Read p. 688-691 in SMG covering the three types of counter-argument.

 

Day Six

Evaluating/Defining Clear and Precise Wording & Outlining Your Argument

 

- Read p. 679-80 in SMG entitled “Clear and Precise Wording”.

- Read p. 307-8 in SMG on ‘Outlining’ an argument.

- Bring to this class 2 outside print sources for your essay.

 

Day Seven

The Dangers of Logical Fallacies in Writing

- Finish the outline of your persuasive essay from the ‘Persuasive Essay Outline’ handout.  Make two copies, one of which to hand-in to instructor today and one you will keep in your manila folder.

- Read p. 691-2 in  SMG on ‘Logical Fallacies’.

 

Day Eight

Peer Critique Day

- A completed first draft of paper is due on this date (have two copies).

- Complete the Self-Critique Sheet to accompany paper.

 


 

 

Day Nine

Conferencing With Instructor

(no class)

- Complete a 2nd draft for conferencing with instructor, incorporating feedback and corrections from your peer editing experience.

- Bring all items from the Conference Checklist to conference with instructor.

 

Day Ten

Conferencing With Instructor

(no class)

- Complete a 2nd draft for conferencing with instructor, incorporating feedback and corrections from your peer editing experience.

- Bring all items from the Conference Checklist to conference with instructor.

 

Day Eleven

Review/Evaluation of Unit

Hand in Final Draft of Essay with your manila folder which contains:  

·         all research (photocopies or originals) for all print and internet sources.

·         your peer edit sheet, and all drafts you completed.
