compare:         identify and discuss similarities between the objects/ideas

 

contrast:           identify and discuss the differences between the objects/ideas

 

criticize:           analyze and judge; find strengths/weaknesses of the objects/ideas

 

define:             give a concise, clear, authoritative meaning of the object/idea.  This involves  describing the object/idea, differentiating it from similar objects/ideas, and supporting  your definition with specific examples.

 

discuss:            examine in detail

 

enumerate:      list; name one-by-one

 

evaluate:         judge, determine the worth of the object/idea according to criteria

 

identify:           tell who/what/when/where and then tell why the object/idea is significant

 

illustrate:         make the object/idea clear through example.

 

interpret:          explain the meaning of the problem/idea, and clarify your understanding of the meaning

 

list:                   identify one-by-one and comment if asked to do so

 

outline:            present a general overview; list the main points in order

 

prove:              establish as true with evidence/ supporting examples

 

review:            give a general survey or account of the problem/idea, and discuss critically if asked

 

state:                set down in a specific, definite manner

 

summarize:      make a condensed statement; state the main points briefly

 

trace:               follow or highlight the successive stages in the development of the subject/idea
