Literacy Autobiography Essay

Assignment

In this essay, you should narrate, describe, and evaluate an experience that significantly shaped or reshaped your attitude toward literacy.  Your experience need not be text bound; it can include a variety of mediums such as dance, art, music, etc.  Your essay should be 3-5 pages long, typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins.  Your grade will be based on the following criteria:

• You must convey the significance of your chosen event.
• Your readers should clearly understand the power of your experience.  You should clearly detail your experience and your attitude.  It should focus on the change that took place.
• Your introduction should engage the interest of your reader and retain his/her attention. 
• Use pacing techniques such as time markers, verb tense markers, flashback and flash-forward to represent the passage of narrative time. 
• Include conflict, tension, and suspense as useful devices to engage your reader.
• Use descriptive devices such as dialogue and/or point of view to create a vivid impression.
• Dialogue should be realistic and substantially add to the understanding of a character.
